I wouldn't say those things are always unrelated, but in our case it has more to do with her daughter's relative happiness. I would bet that is also true for Gary - as he seems to be the honeydo king. Please don't misunderstand, Vika's mom was not thrilled that Vika was moving so far away, but so long as she reports to the mother ship (see what I did there? - I am so clever  ) that she is happy, and made the right decision - the world is good.

I am not only the "honeydo King" I had a "clean lake" in front of my house and could catch fish to eat (I am sure she figured I would then do something to make them smell really bad before we ate them) AND I had lots of grass! You can eat grass you know! She said that "now she can die" because her daughter will always have food. Grass and stinky fish...but food none the less! OMG!

She also is convinced her daughter is now "a rich American" (how hard was THAT?) Because she has a machine for wash dishes, an electric can opener AND a dryer for her clothes.

We haven't convinced her to come for a visit yet (or even try) I would love it. Alla, not so much.

Now I need to know...did you mean "mother ship" or "mothership"

Well, I'm still looking forward to meeting mine. We (Mila & I) hope to go to Kiev over the Orthodox holidays and get acquainted. But she always asked how I am doing and sometimes even calls me her son so its' a good start.

My MIL is one the most caring women I've had the chance to meet. My wife is always in trouble with Mama because she does not let me rest and always has me running all over town on my day's off. :)

MIL is unaware of how it drives my wife absolutely MAD when I am sitting idle longer than 5 minutes. She gets wound up about an hour after she wakes, and stays that way until she has boku activity.

I "discovered" Russian girls when I was 20. I can only imagine chasing them around at 15 or 16. Wow. I'd probably be a grandpa by now.

Slim,

My stepson is 24 and definitely on the target radar of the ever growing list of Russian speaking girls in our area. Right now he is in San Francisco with one, who is trying out for American Idol. This girl has a beautiful singing voice, but I'm not too sure how she will do with the music they make them perform. This is the one Lena is most concerned about at this point. I think too many of them still think that it will be okay to marry and move in with his parents.

My MIL knows it and agrees with Alla! Alla can't STAND it when I am not "doing something". She needs to get over that. (Alla hasn't come home from class yet)

Yes, an old FSU tradition that Alla has no intent of following.

I will pass that along. Just so you know Gary, I have zero hope for any change, based on today's hysterics.

Ok, first off I share a birthday with my MIL, can you say bonus points. She thinks that I am wonderful and that her daughter is so lucky. . . See you can fool them. She has a thing about putting her hand over an area that "hurts" to check it and has a home grown recipe for any thing that ails me. If I here one more time about the grass that I need to eat to get healthy. . . Seriously, she is a fantastic person.

No longer in the hands of the USCIS, for my wife at least, next up MIL.

Alla doesn't usually get hysterical, so maybe you can hope for a mellowing with age. But she does occasionally get that way. The other day she started sweeping the floor around my desk while I was on VJ. Including dragging the broom over my feet and asking me to move so she could sweep under the desk. Then she will sit down and seriously discuss this "problem" and tell me about how hard she studies and how much time it takes, yada, yada. I don't know what is worse. Brief hysterical outbursts...or long slow, quiet lectures? She will get her garage door opener Saturday and she will be happy for several days playing with her new toy. So far it hasn't snowed here in the valley, but she can see it on the mountains and she says she will be VERY agitated if she has to get out of her car to open or close the garage door.

3 years ago she stood in the snow in Moscow or Kiev or wherever she was on business, waiting for a bus.

Oh, well...all is OK, the world is still turning on its axis, I wake up with aches and pains and know I am still alive.

Personally, I think not being able to understand a thing she is saying is a huge advantage...

I'd agree. When my wife yells at me in Russian I just look at her all stupid-like and smile.... which makes her yell more.

okay to marry and move in with his parents.

Maybe this is why my wife is always mad. She probably thought she was going to move here and end up in a really nice house with my parents. Whoops.
