Clarifying my earlier post:

If I marry my fiancée here in USA (i.e. have marriage license/register), can we do the same in her country (register and file marriage license) Ukraine to satisfy the parents and family?

Thanks

Seems to me the first thing the marriage office in Ukraine will ask is "Are either of you currently married?" Since the answer to that is going to be yes, then unless their laws are quite odd, I can't see them giving you a marriage license, though you might be able to talk them into registering your existing marriage.

DON'T PANIC

I bet they would be happy if you just translated the certificate for them to hang proudly on there wall. I would wait to see if Alla of Gary and Alla knows anything about it. from my experience I would say a few bribes and anything can be done. just remember you are the man of the house it is your job to make good decision and that's not always easy.

Yes and no.

Ukraine considers US marriages to be "civil" since a government marriage license is issued, even for a religious marriage. Married in the US is "married" in Ukraine. They will not issue another marriage license. That's the bad news.

The good news? You don;t need it. The Orthodox Church does not recognize civil marriages and does not issue "marriage licenses" So you CAN get married in the Orthodox Church (and they do not recognize the US marriage)

ALL couples in Ukraine that get married in the Church MUST also get married at the city hall or some other place in a civil ceremony. The church will usually require that you do that FIRST. Once the Priest pronounces you "Man and Wife" he doesn't want you going to someone else for the same pronouncement.

While neither Alla nor I are religious people, we have attended Orthodox marriage ceremonies and it is quite the production!

It will be easier, and faster logisitically to go ahead and get married here and then go back to Ukraine for an Othordox ceremony. Her parents are not going to like that if they are deeply religious. How you deal with that is your business.

Married is married. Usually, one must affirm they are free to marry in order to marry. For married people to affirm they are free to marry is generally referred to as "fraud", a crime in most countries.
