In what universe are they reasonably priced abroad?

A Virgin train from London to Liverpool costs £120+ (almost $200) or £190+ (almost $300) first-class.

That's true. I dont know what it is about the uk, but on the continent they seem to be able to make rail services affordable. Here the average price for a commuter train to london is about £3500, and it's apparently going up about 10% in Jan. Victoria wants everyone to use public transport, but why would anyone do it when it's not economical?

I don't know about the affordability on the continent. When we were in Germany this September, my wife took a trip from Berlin to Duesseldorf to see her father. Flying over on Air Berlin (1 hour flight) was 25% less than riding on the ICE (4.25 hours ride). Doesn't make the train attractive when you spend more time travelling and pay more to do so.

True. The subways in germany are a lot cheaper. In London you can pay as much as a full out of town train ticket to get around. Even the buses here are a rip - £2.50 for a half mile journey? ** that.

One day I forgot my oyster card and I think it was either 4.50 or 5 for a single in zone 1

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Local transit rates in Germany are very reasonable. I think we paid EUR 6.00 for a day pass that lets you use the entirety of the city's public transport (subway, rail, light rail and bus) for the day including connections to/from the suburbs. If you have a party of 3-5, you can buy a small group pass for EUR 15.00 making it even less expensive per person and hence more attractive for small groups.

Gas being somewhere around $9.00/gal and free parking in the city being a thing of the past for the most part, you just can't beat that. Not even talking about not having to deal with the hassles of traffic or the speed of getting from here to there.

My parents live outside the city limits about 3 min from the nearest train station where you can hop on the train and be in the city center within 25 minutes. There's no way you'd ever get that timing driving let alone finding a place to park close to where you want to go. The transit system in Berlin is awesome.
