Can facebook affect your approval???

Ok, so I was talking to my sister yesterday and she told me she saw on the news the other day that a couple who claimed to be married got denied because the facebook profile of the man said he was in a relationship with a different woman and at the time, he was with that woman in another place and not with his wife. I thought my sister was just joking but she says its legit. I have been trying to find the story on the news with not much luck. However, it did make me think. Since facebook is a public forum, why wouldn't the government check it out? I know some jobs look at facebook if an individual has a profile to see how that person has put his or herself out there and how it will affect that individual representing that business. Seems crazy how things are nowadays.

I suppose my concern is that my fiance and eloped and many of our friends and family don't know yet, thus the reason for not "facebooking" it. We wanted to tell them in a more personal way. Also, we don't take facebook that seriously and its an ongoing joke to see who will change their status first. However, if the government would see it as us not taking our marriage seriously (what is this country coming to...?), then we will go ahead and make the change.

Anywuzzle, just thought it was interesting. I hope everyone has a great day!

Am I understanding you correctly that you and your fiance eloped...meaning you are married?? And family and friends don't know? IMO as a K-1 that may not be a good idea. Someone more knowledgeable may come along and voice their opinions as well, but my thought is as evidence of "true" relationships the government looks at if family and friends know about the relationship. Also, IF you are married, K-1 is the wrong visa...should be CR-1/IR-1...just my thoughts.

Her timeline says they got married after K-1 visa POE, so that is fine. The story your sister told you is that someone said they were in a relationship with another person... not the wife they were petitioning for. THAT is bad. In my opinion, if your fb just says "in a relationship" or something I don't think it will matter too much if it is married or whatever. I don't think they check fb unless they suspect something already... and it won't make or break your case. They can't put too much stock in fb because not everyone really pays attention to it. If you want to wait until you can tell everyone in person, then I think you should do so. Also, change your privacy settings! Don't panic!

AOS for my husband

Oh, so I guess there is some truth to it, lol. Thanks for the links Aya. Thanks Harpa and Menina for clearing things up for Aya. We are putting in our AOS in the next couple of weeks and was just trying to cover my bases. Of course our family and close friends know about our relationship and that we got married...just not the whole world. I don't see the problem in that however if the government ddi, then we would make the necessary changes. Just really wanted to see if anyone had heard anything about this affecting someone's case in a serious way. Thanks for the advice Harpa. Seems like I check the privacy settings everyday because facebook is always changing, lol! Just another thing to get me worked up about this whole process.

I cannot stand facebook as it is because the world can find you even when you dont want to be found, that and I think that it causes a ton of problems in some relationships. But yes I have heard/read that the government can look at your facebook, myspace and even visajourney. Someone the other day was saying that the occasionally interview officer will come onto visajourney on occasion but they are looking for people that are fruading etc. I mean they dont have the time to search random peoples stuff, they must have a reason in such cases such as they suspect something big time.

BUT most of all I want to say congrats on becoming a MRS! :) all the best.
