Hey everyone, my husband and I arrived at Chicago yesterday. What do I do now in regards to his whole visa process?? He came here on an cr1 visa. How do we get a SSN? What exactly do I have to do in the 90 day period they gave us?? Im confused! I will post POE details when I get some rest! Thanks

Congratulations on getting your husband to the US with you!

First of all, it depends on how quickly the POE takes to send in your information to Homeland Security to how quickly your hubby will get his greencard OR the SS office to get the application for his SS number.

My husband came through JFK for his POE and it took a couple of weeks for them to send the paperwork in for his stuff. We ended up waiting 2 weeks and going to the SS office ourselves and making an application for his SS number. Now the tricky part with that, is that the name on the social security card has to match EXACTLY what homeland security puts on his greencard.

We had trouble because the SS office tried to say that my husband's full name wouldn't fit on the card and when he got the green card, it had his FULL name on it so we had to resubmit another application to correct his name on the social security card. *BTW his whole name DID fit on the card!*

I was able to get my husband on my insurance at work and pretty much everything to do with that, BUT you do have to wait for the social security card to get state DL and etc.....

Keep in mind the expiration date on his conditional green card because you will have to apply for ROC no more than 90 days before the expiration of the CGC.

I have heard from some people that they got a reminder letter telling them to apply for ROC and then I have heard from others saying they didn't.

Good luck with everything and congratulations on your family being together!

Yours will take little longer because you need to replace the SSN too :)

Loto

SSN is issued by the SSA..

Green cards are issued by the USCIS

There is NO "speed up" or "slow down" relationship between the two as they are not dependent on each other and are issued by different agencies....

YMMV

I would strongly advise you to march over to the SS office right away and apply for one. The box on the DS-230 is not the most reliable. Also it takes ages for the info to process.

So you really should do it yourself. I did that on the Monday after I arrived and had my SS Card 4 days later. Granted it was only a name change since I already had one from a previous J1 visa, but it WILL definitely be faster if you apply in person.

2 Days later I got my driving license. I'm glad we got everything so fast by being proactive.

his passport was stamped with a red stamp which reads :

ALIEN HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 216

AND OF THE PROCEDURES FOR HAVING THE CONDITIONAL BASIS

OF HIS/HER STATUS REMOVED.

Should not have been given a 90 day period.... did you fill out an I-94? if so you should not have...

Did they give you the one year stamp in your passport?

What did you "tick" on the DS-230 regarding automatic issuance of the SSN?

they gave me two years 2012

i did not fill out an I 94 form. i only filled out the blue form. i think that was for customs.

i did check on the ds 230 form that my husband wants a SSN issued.

There is no 90 days, CR1 is an immigration visa

i made a mistake on the whole 90 day thing.. lol.. sorry

CR1 people will do Removal of Condition (ROC), not AOS, after 21 months, but before 24 months of the POE.

There is no I-94 (arrival departure card) concept for immigrant visa (IR1 or CR1) holders.

SSN - Typically few weeks to 1 month or so (If ticked yes in DS-230). If you feel it is not coming within the timeframe, visit SSA office and apply one.

Welcome Letter & GC - Typically 4 to 8 weeks. If 8 weeks are elapsed, talk to USCIS or open an Infopass.

Loto

so now what i do is wait for my husbands ssn and green card? then we wait untill november 2012 to remove conditions? i hope i got it right.

thanks everyone for ur input.

My wife has never had a SSN, can she still apply at the SS office right away without issues?

Blah.
