I recommend owning some precious metals. Physically possess the metal and never put all your eggs in one basket.

What cracks me up about the current wisdom to regular folks in the street that they should own gold, is that much of this wisdom is based upon the surety of the pending political apocalypse.

Which begs me to ask the following question. If you have a hoard of gold coins in your firebox, and all commerce has collapsed, who do you think is going to buy those coins? How are you going to redeem them? It's not like you can slice off a sliver of a coin and give it to the farmer for a bucket of milk.

A 40+ year old will not retire for another 30+ years - certainly long enough to recover any short-term losses.

If you're 55-60+, then yes.
