The Children of Single Mothers even in middle income homes are much more likely to: Get pregnant before marriage, drop out of school, have more difficulty with the law, become involved in drugs.

When it comes to the Black community in America, the vast majority of their problems stem from the break-down of the Black family.

THe Government programs... well intentioned as they were, have totally destroyed an already challenged and fragile part of America.

It's stunning that in 2010 so many still can't see the fundamental dynamics of what maintains a proper society.

The black community's 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.

This issue entered the public consciousness in 1965, when a now famous government report by future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan described a "tangle of pathology" among blacks that fed a 24 percent black "illegitimacy" rate. The white rate then was 4 percent.

Many accused Moynihan, who was white, of "blaming the victim:" of saying that black behavior, not racism, was the main cause of black problems. That dynamic persists. Most talk about the 72 percent has come from conservative circles; when influential blacks like Bill Cosby have spoken out about it, they have been all but shouted down by liberals saying that a lack of equal education and opportunity are the true root of the problem.

Interesting, using your figures, that while an increase from 24% to 72% among Blacks represents a 300% increase since the creation of the Great Society, it also represents a 725% increase among Whites. That indicates more of social phenomenon as a whole, rather simple racial or cultural phenomena.

I think a child raised by a wealthy single mother has a much better shot at success in life than a child raised by a poor mother and father. I think we should focus less on getting these women married and more on getting them educated.

And just how many "wealthy single black mothers" are there in South Central Los Angeles? :whistle:

EDIT: Have you seen the job market lately? Newly minted Nurses, Lawyers, Ph.D's, MBA's are becoming desperate upon leaving top graduate schools, only to find no jobs available to them. What they do have is $200,000.00 in unpaid student loans.

If you are poor because of a disease say like MS and cannot work I can say sure support them. BUT .... how much support do we have to give someone because they CONTINUE to make bad choices. The number one cause for poverty in this country are single unwed mothers.Why should society have to pay for the welfare mother who dropped out of school at 15 and had her sixth child at the age of twenty four? Where is the responsability on her part to our society.What about the part of the culture of the blacks that say "you better not excell in school because you will be "too white"?What graduate from highschool ......how white of you .You liberals are all alike with the blame everyone and everything but me cop out. Is it not putting the cart before the horse to tell them that getting married to some loser who will probably be in and out of the correction system is a better answer?

What is your solution then? How do we fix the problem of the break-down of the family? How do you change attitudes that are prevalent?

I think that with some reforms in our current system, it can work. I was raised by a single mother - who received benefits while she got her degree. Now both of us are net contributors to society.

I feel like yours (and others') answer is to just let them drown. I don't know about you, but I don't want to live in a society full of criminals, druggies and other losers.

ETA: btw, I don't doubt that children raised in single parent middle-income households have a high propensity to get into trouble, but I think the single largest predictor is income level, not the number of parents in the household.

You feel that way because you live in close proximity to your fellow Americans; you are smart enough to know what affects them will inevitably affect you.

Most of the "let them drown" "patriots" have consciously picked lifestyles that keep them as far away from their fellow Americans as possible. They will rant and rave about their love for America, while making every attempt to live as far away as possible from the population centers that most Americans call home.

I think we both agree, there is no simple, easy or fast way to correct the damage that has been done.

Welfare destroys the age old dynamic of admiring, elevating and eventually choosing a mate which will be a asset to the creation of a family.

People must feel... and others must observe a real downside to choosing to bed (and wed) with unstable partners.

While I would never want Children to starve for the errors of their parents, we have done too much ..... to the point where lifestyles which lead to poverty are shielded from the discomfort of poverty.

Why should the "poor" eat better than the working class? NC food stamps gives a family of 3 nearly $400 each month..... thats not "helping feed the poor" that is Govt becoming 100% food provider.

What is so bad about allowing people who drop out of school..... and refuse to take advantage of training programs....with them existing on generic food brands and buying bread from the "day old" shop?

Using Coupons and scrimping to get by, who the "F" are they to expect everyone but themselves will feed them and their kids?

Right, now what percentage of urban AA fit your ideal scenario?

We? So what, they just have kid after kid, continue acting irresponsibly, then it's up to "we" to fix their choices? I want to help people who are down and out and suffered bad luck, certainly not someone who has an underling culture that does not give a #######.

Anyone who does not see that this is rooted in culture, needs to get out of their upscale left-wing neighborhoods and go interact with these people. Go visit various AA communities, go teach in these communities and then come tell me that these people are just down and out. Regardless of cause, they have built a culture of crime, mediocrity, blame and poverty.

Just the other day I was driving on 95 and saw a vehicle approaching rapidly in the left lane. Another vehicle switched in the same lane, yet they still hand more than enough room from the first vehicle. Next you hear the vehicle applying their horn for about 30 seconds while behind them. Who was it? An AA lady, ghetto looking as it gets from Maryland; probably from Prince George County. You think I should have to pay for someone with such a scum-of-the-earth pathetic attitude? Or "we" should go out of our way to help her? I don't think so.

A what point do those on the left wake up and realize that the decades of excuses have achieved nothing? FA actually. Or the failure to recognize this is cultural in nature, is why the problem still continues unabated and with no end in sight. Now I am not saying the do nothing approach of the right works but the give them money and all will go away has failed.

A note, I don't think has been mentioned which suggest the 72% rate is not telling the whole story.

African Americans also have a much higher rate of abortions, which if all things were equal, the rate of illegitimacy would be even higher.
