Renew driver's licence

Hi Y'all,

I have a question regarding to the I-20 usage.

This is what happened, I’m from Taiwan, came to the US with a F1 Visa in 2008. 6 months ago I found a job when I was still at school and my I-20 was valid, I did finished the school however, I didn't have OPT to apply as it's an non-degree program, without school-related reason I couldn’t ask school to extend the paper for me so I left school and joined the company. When the company filing for H1 my I-20 was valid, long story short we have been waiting for reply from the INS for months now.

Not that I didn’t foreseen the problem, and you might say there are more than that, but at the time it was either register another semester or get working experience and I chose to work.

At this point I can only try to solve one problem at a time, as of right now: I need to renew my driver's license, my birthday is next month and without a valid I-20 will it be applicable to renew the license?

I'm hope against all the odds I might have a slight chance to renew it, it would be very inconvenient for me to forfeit it now with the most important paper is in pending…

It’ll be very appreciated if anyone has the knowledge to tell me what to expect, or to do.

Luke

Luke, Different states seem to have different rules/ procedures/ requirements when it comes to driver's licenses. Someone may be able to offer some advice with this, but they'll need to know which state do you live in.

N M Thanks much, I live in OH right now, actually I'm going to the local SOS office this afternoon with my most recent school records and Immigration documents, my only concern is people. I hope I can convince he/she it takes time for INS to issue any kind of change on my statues, that is only if the person concerns and willing to listen.

If I don’t get pass on this one I will try the next one, so I still need your advice, please let me know.

If you applied for H1-B, you should have gotten your approval before October 1st of this year.

I may be wrong, but it's already end of November, and unfortunately, I don't think that looks too good.

Most DPS now days would not issue you a drivers lic unless you have valid document. If you are awaiting response from INS they normally dont issue lic based on that.

Unfortunately most DPS officers are not aware of all the visa types either, I was on CR1 - which is perm residence and the officer did not know what CR1, they had to call their manager and she had to call someone to verify that CR1 is perm residence.
