I just mailed the petition to TX today, what can I do now besides wait for the approval?

Well, you can register an account on the USCIS website so that you get an email and / or text message when they approve you or issue an RFE - click here.

Other than that you can do what the rest of us do - obsessively read these forums and study up on the next stages in the process. It'll be a long wait, but it gives you an opportunity to prepare yourself.

I just sent our petition a few days ago too! :)I've been printing our old emails and such. I'm also reading a lot of older threads here on VJ so I know what I have to prepare for.

I know it's going to be a long wait though!

Wait for your NOA1, NOA2, and get everything together for the interview =) Peru does Packets 3 and 4 together, so you wont have to mail anything to the embassy, just bring it all to the interview. Good luck on your journey, and if you have any Peru specific questions feel free to hit me up

Can you tell me where do you get a receipt number to do this?

your NOA1 will have a number on it and instructions on how to check your petition.

If you are too anxious to wait for your NOA1,...and if you paid with a personal check, you can get your receipt number off there. Check your account online and view your cashed check, choose the back view of the check and it will have the receipt number that you need to register with USCIS. :)

You can continue to gather evidence (phone calls, chat logs, e-mails, letters, etc.) Also, you should focus on saving money since the AOS fee is over $1,000 and there are other important expenses along the way -medical examination, vaccines, visa cost, if you plan to attend the interview, the money drain is endless!

Best wishes!

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

Start preparing all the documents you will need for the interview. Get copies of any documents your fiancee will need (check the embassy website for their requirements) get the originals, copies and translations (if needed). Police reports are valid for 12 months no matter what the document lists as an expiration, so you can get started on that. Start to organize your evidence of relationship in an orderly manner and build on that. When the time comes you should only need to make copies and send it off, or take it to her.

Education? Will she require English classes or does she want to further her education more here? Get copies of any foreign credentials, get them translated, get them evaluated and apply for education courses or search them out. Check out what is available in your area. Find otu when classes start, when to enroll. You may have to do it weeks in advance. Alla started her master's degree program 5 days after arrival with a 50% private grant I had secured several months in advance. Doing nothing or repeatedly checking USCIS websites is a waste of time. Remodel the kitchen. You will know your petition is approved when the letter arrives in your mailbox.

Drivers license? What is required in your state? Find out. YOU need to know all this stuff, she is counting on YOU. Children? we had a son to get started in school. He started the 2nd day after arrival. The WORST thing you can dp is be unprepared when she arrives.

Having been through the whole process, I can tell you that the visa process is the EASIEST part. By far. The wait is not that long and hardly enough to properly prepare for a person moving from another country.
