On my wife's AOS document, the USCIS A# (which I'm assuming is her Alien Number) is printed. Does anyone know if this can be used at the present moment. The reason I'm asking is because she wants to start school soon and the school was asking for her A#. She cannot start without it. She was waiting for her green card to be approved but if she can use her USCIS A# now and start it would be great.

Normally schools look for the social security number. The A# is not useful for anything related to registering/enrolling in school. Also, without a green card she will have to pay full price for tuition...when she has a green card she may qualify for financial aid.

There is really no "use" for the A number outside of immigration. A school would use it for the I-20, but that's for international students and . . . . boy . . . is that going to be expensive! Usually, institutions of higher educations, specifically colleges and State universities, require at least 6/12 months of "residence" for in-state tuition. What's the difference?

Well, if you go to a community college and do 15 units (full time) a semester, you pay $300 (or slightly less) instead of $3,000 (or slightly more) per semester. Quite a difference.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I agree with the previous post. Usually, schools are interested in having Social Security Numbers, but even that is not absolutely necessary. When I first came to the USA as a H4 visa (child under 21 of a H1 or professional visa), I did not have a SSN or an ITIN, so the college where I enrolled created a number for me in the records system. I did not apply for federal loans or anything like that, and paid my tuition in full (well, my dad did). So, I would think that she should be able to enroll even without her Permanent Resident Card. As an interesting factoid, in actuality, even undocumented persons are able to enroll in college, but they just have to pay out-of-state tuition fees.

Best wishes!

Thanks everyone...we'll just wait for the Green Card so she can get financial aid. I can't afford to pay out of pocket.

You A# will never change and yes you can use that now to apply for school. Our community college required it for registration, so it is not unheard of.
