Hello everyone,

My step-son who is 10 years old has just arrived to the US. I filed for him as my son as his mother is still a permanent resident at this time. When I filed the paper work I checked the box for the social security card. I have read that since he is under 18 we will need to apply for a number and card at the local office. Is this true?

Is he a permanent resident or a US citizen since I am a US citizen and he is my son? Do we need to file anything from this point get get either of these? Or will his card arrive in the mail? ANy help and guidance is greatly appreciated

Yes you must go to the local office and apply for his SSC. Go to the local SS office ( bring his passport with the visa and stamp from POE )and apply for him card should arrive within two weeks the card will not arrive as you are correct he is under 18, He is a permanent resident until he reaches 18 and applies for citizenship or his mom becomes a citizen before he is 18 and then he a citizen as he will meet the requirments.

Congrats I know the MOM is happy :)
