Hi, I have a few questions that I would greatly appreciate it if people can help me based on their experience. I want to try and get my brother to study here in the US via a student visa. he is 20 years old and lives in Mexico. He doesn't have a lot of money but could I sponsor him? Do these visas work for community colleges? What are the requirements to go about this? He was here when he was younger(illegally) but he left before he was here illegally for more than a year after his 18th birthday. He went to school here and finished high school over there, would this somehow void his chance of getting a student visa? Any info will truly help thanks in advance. Or is there any other way of helping him to get any kind of visa to come visit? By the way I am in the process of naturalization in case the info is needed. Thanks again

Your brother would need to be accepted into a college in the US and meet their financial requirements. Most colleges and universities require you (the applicant) to have upwards of $20,000 immediatly available to meet the tuition, books, room and board requirements.

First step, contact the international student officer at the school you'd like him to apply to in order to find out their requirements

Good luck

Presumably he is in University now if he is 20. Could he do a year abroad? Does his Uni have ties with US institutions that could help?

Yes you can sponsor him.

From personal experience, I got a student visa in 2003 to attend a community college.

So he should be fine.

You should call the international student office of the college he plans to attend to know what their requirements are.

The fact that he was here illegally might in fact void his chances, if he is in the USCIS system as an illegal immigrant.

But I'm not very knowledgeable on all the ramifications it could imply for him.

Someone else might give you more insight on the subject.

Hope it works out for your lil bro!
