Hello everyone,

I want to ask you guys about my upcoming interview. Does my wife have to accompany me to my interview? She will be busy on my interview day (she has to work and take final exam on that day) so she will be afraid of she could not go with me. If anyone knows the answer, please let me know. Thank you so much.

I doubt she needs to, but make sure to take her original passport/naturalization cert/birth cert and the original marriage license. Take also copies in case they want a copy.

Yes , if she was required they would have said so.

I took all those documents but they didn't ask. Almost everyone reports the same.

A guy at Yakima USCIS Office brought his illegal wife ! Not only was she not required but she was actually asked to leave the office, A bit harsh eh ?

Another guy was married to three women at the same time. A glutton for punishment and anniversary presents.

No - she does not have to be there and in fact, would not be allowed in to the interview with you. Her presence would be for moral support as well as an obvious indication to the interviewer that she and you are together. The interviewer may ask where your wife is and it sounds like a really good reason to me that she is writing a major exam the same time you are doing your interview. You could mention to the adjudicator that you hope you both do well so you can go out and celebrate afterwards :) .

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

No, but if it is marriage based, then it would always help a little bit. Mine at the time couldn't make it and so I went alone. The IO was curious why she wasn't there with me. So I had to explain she was working and he then moved on. So it always helps to show that you still have ties and are still married with the person if you bring them. It probably would be questioned if you don't, but not to the point of any rejections etc.

Of course this is only based on marriage based petitions. 5 year ones you wouldn't even be questioned about your spouse not being there...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Another who is your IO dependent question, yes, I went with my wife, but had to pinch myself to make sure I was awake and not dreaming that I was there. Her IO didn't even want to say hi to me. Would think since her application was based on her marriage to me, would at least be worth a "hi". But no, her IO just wanted to see my papers, and papers we had.

For the naturalization, the focus is on the person applying for it. The basis of naturalization is what makes a difference here (3 years based on marriage or 5 years). If 3 years, then all they need is proof that it is indeed the case. The USC spouse is of no value to them at this point, just like NickD said....

They don't allow anyone inside the interview room, only the person whose name is on the notice. I wasn't even allowed to go upstairs where hubby went to the applicants waiting room, where they called him for the interview. i had to wait downstairs in some hall/waiting room for an hour. With other spouses! But as others said, it is good to be there for moral support, if convenient.
