It is beautiful country up there. Used to go park many times in Champlain and my then girlfriend from Montreal used to come get me. Spent many times and days in the area. Afterwards when I got back to my truck I would be given a load to go get picked up in St Albans to head southward or west. Can't remember the company for sure but I believe it was batteries but it was many years ago now and may be wrong. I also remember that Northern New York and Vermont people were nice and friendly but not so much in the southern part of the states and I found that strange. The main thing I remember is it was beautiful country up there but cold as can be in winter. Also a lot of Canadians did head into Vermont but didn't know why until you showed the hospital. I do know that my girlfriend and her friend would go into the states for medical care sometimes and it was paid by the Canadian health insurance.

The batteries are Energizer. The Energizer Bunny's home is in St Albans! The Bunny is a Vermonter!

The Canadian health system will pay for the treatment in Vermont IF the people have waited MORE THAN ONE YEAR for the procedure. (who waits more than one year for an MRI in a city of 2 million people here? ) If they come before then it is "cash and carry". There are plenty of affluent Quebecois that can afford to pay for testing here. They can jump far ahead in the line for things like surgery in Canada if they get the tests here.

Healthcare is not the only reason they come. We are a great place to visit. heck people come from other parts of the US. But they also come to avoid the 15% sales tax, $4.40 per gallon gasoline, and taxes on things like boats and other luxuries. Taxes on a "weekend place" are much cheaper in Vermont than in Quebec. mnay of my neighbors are Quebecois staying at their "weekend home"

The southern part of the state (and southern New hampshire) are full of wealthy liberal dems from Massachusetts escaping the taxes they foisted on others.

I think Vermont wishes they were part of Canada.

It is a state secret, but we want to join Australia. But we want a Big Star on the flag in our honor and that seems to be a sticking point in the negotiations.

I do remember the high sales taxes in Canada and that was just the regular sales tax. Fuel always was high up there.

I had no idea that it was year before one could go to the states for medical care. My girlfriend I had then friend who was going to the states had been waiting about 9 months for her shoulder surgery. She was scheduled to finally get it but for some reason they had postponed it again and I remember she was going to the states so maybe she was going to wait for a few months but was sure she was heading at that time soon. It was long ago. I remember she had been paying for about 15 years extra so she could have a private room if she ever needed a hospital stay and they had denied it as they had none for her. She was pissed at that.

Also remember back then I saw a billboard that bragged that they had a MRI finally someplace west of Montreal and I asked my friend why that was such a big deal as we had one in practically every part of town where I live and was pretty common for years. She said they had been promising one for about 10 years and if anyone needed one before that they had to travel a long ways and stay overnight. Amazing that something that was so commonplace and a huge medical tool hadn't been already in place up there.

They could never beat Montreal's night life, strip clubes, women and restaurants.

This statement also implies that an MRI is available to everyone in the US (with insurance) without question. I can tell you from personal experience it is not.
