Teens bragged about fatally beating Old Bridge man, authorities say

Divyendu Sinha, 49, of Old Bridge, died after being attacked outside his home and five teens have been charged in his killing.

OLD BRIDGE — Minutes after allegedly attacking an Old Bridge computer scientist out for a late-night walk with his family, two of the five teenagers charged in his fatal beating were bragging to each other about what they had done and how much they enjoyed it, authorities said.

"My hand’s definitely broken no lie. I never hit an N-word so hard," Christopher Conway texted Julian Daley, according to a transcript of the text conversation as read by Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet. In the transcript, Kuberiet uses the phrase "n-word" rather than the actual racial epithet.

"I will but yo, tomorrow night, you down again?" Daley texted back.

Then, about a half hour later, Conway texts Daley: "LMAO (laughing my a s s off) highlight of my life."

...

"Five young men ... went on a wilding spree for no apparent purpose," Kuberiet told the judge during the hearing, describing the events that occurred the night of June 25.

He said the five boys, all of whom attended Old Bridge High School, got into a car and eventually ended up on Fela Drive, where they spotted Sinha, his wife, and two sons walking in front of their home at about 11:30 p.m.

"Four of them got out of the car. One of them tapped Mr. Sinha on the shoulder and said, "I gotta talk to you," Kuberiet said.

Then they attacked the man, beating him so severely he died four days later at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Nope, no 'hate' crime at all. I mean 'hate' is only when it's racially motivated.

There's nothing 'hate' related to this crime.

I think perhaps probation would be good for these kids. As harsh crimes are only reserved for 'hate' crimes.

From the information in the OP, it doesn't sound like a hate crime. It does sound like depraved indifference though.

I believe that the county prosecutor can't find a reason to call this a hate crime. However, there has been a pattern in this area of black teenagers attacking indian immigrants. I don't believe this was not a hate crime, although I do believe they probably don't have enough to make that stick.

You think they randomly chose this man? I think he was picked out for looking like a foreigner, but it will depend on whether the boys passed up other potential victims or if this poor man was the first opportunity they spotted.

I really don't know what is worse though, teenagers attacking and killing someone because of their race, or teenagers attacking and killing someone for the pleasure of it. Either way, I hope these kids get the book thrown at them.

Foreigner? He looks like a man of Indian descent. Around here in Middlesex county (where this happened, where I live) people of Indian descent (immigrant or natural born) are about one in five. There's more people who look like us than there are people who look like the charged teens.

 they are out on bail

What I mean is that he was looked at as an outsider or invader, even if he was born here. Ethnic tensions across the country right now center around a Nativist animosity towards 'foreign invaders', however irrational that may be.

I think you're looking at this through the prism of national politics. This isn't Arizona and Sheriff Joe wasn't hiding in the bushes controlling these kids by remote control.

It's just as bad as a hate crime because the attack was random, unprovoked, and has the effect of terrorizing a community. It doesn't matter what they call it, as long as they get the stiffest penalty possible. I hope they get life with no parole.

They won't get that.

I think they picked him because he was Indian, not because he looked like an outsider. There is a lot of black-Indian tension around here.

Care to elaborate on that for people that don't live in your area?
