Hello Everybody,

I have not received the NOA2 yet for my petition, but I am getting the supporting documents together for the I-134, Affidavit of Support. Does anyone know if monthly bank statements are enough to prove bank balances? I called the bank today, they could not understand why a simple monthly statement would not be enough.

Second question, because I have not received NOA2 yet, is to too soon be be getting these statements together? How recient do these documents need to be?

Because I am self-employed, I need to show my tax returns. Tax returns are lots of paper, or mine are anyway. Can I just send in the 1040 form or do I need to send all 20 pages of all my returns for the last 3 years?

Thank you!

Bank statements, typically from the last 3 to 4 recent months should be sufficient. You will likely have difficulty getting any large commercial or regional bank to understand that you would like to have a bank letter that indicated your banking activity over a certain period. A local credit union (if they are your primary bank) should be more helpful. Remember that the bank is not making the decision for this case, so the easiest answer if to provide nothing more than you can obtain on your own. A simple bank statements should suffice, combined with an official letter indicating employment status and income/salary.

Since you indicate that you are self-employed, the complete tax returns for the last 3 tax years (2007, 2008, 2009) would be the best source of proof of finances since this is what you have reported to the government. If you have copies of all pages, send them. Better to send too much than too little. I was in a similar situation and had a large tax return and copied everything, with audit ready receipts for all items claimed. We had no issues during the entire process. GOOD LUCK!

If you have enough income, then the bank statements are not needed. Use official IRS tax transcripts (or all 20 pages). They are FREE.

Thank you for your help! One bank called me today to tell me they have a signed letter for me in the mail!!! I worry way too much. I am worried that my letters will have dates that are too old to make the consulate happy. But I want to gather this paperwork now, so that later when it is needed, i will not have to wait long and be panicked about it if there is a delay.

I figure I will flood them with paperwork, that way all bases are covered.

Thank you again!

I was also wondering how recent the paperwork has to be...I haven't received my NOA2 either yet, but want to be ready to go as soon as the Packet 3 arrives.

It's really hard as there's no telling how long this process will take, just don't want the stress of a last-minute panic..!
