Ok so I have recieved my NOA1 and I'm in the process of waiting for my NOA2 hopefully and trying to get prepared for when things come through on my end.

I need to have a police check done and I'm confused do I get it done through the Toronto police services, which is where I live, or do I go through the RCMP?

I also read that the police check has to have a date within a year of my interview so is it ok if I get this going now?

Or should I be waiting for that Packet3 from the embassy?

I've heard that police checks can take quite awhile so I don't want to be in a position where I'm waiting on something like this and slowing down the whole process!

Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Or any help as to where I go to get this whole thing underway?

Thanks so much.

Sometimes I feel like the stress or this whole process will be the death of me, but I'm sure everyone reading this post can relate!

I went to the police station at College and Yonge and got mine done and it was accepted by the consulate

It took about 3 weeks to come in the mail.

Now, the consulate will only accept the police certificate if it is less than a year old, I got mine in June and had the interview the following May where they asked me for a new one. Just be cautious of when you get it

Good luck

You can get it at either you local station or the RCMP and it should be good for your interview if you get it now.

My now wife got hers in about 5 days from her local station, the police cert was one of the quickest things we had to aquire.

As long as it's a FEDERAL record check, it doesn't matter where it came from. The federal repository is called CPIC so if you're unsure, you can ask the police station clerk if the check is done through CPIC. More than likely, it is. Also, I don't think you need the vulnerable sector check, if they ask.

Every station and agency is different so if you want to make sure you have the check done in time for the interview, you can call around and ask how long it takes (and how much it costs).

(I used to be a clerk for the RCMP and I did record checks every day...if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.)

Local police station is perfectly fine. takes anywhere from 3-6 weeks to get to you unless you go rural. Going Rural you can get it the same day LOL in the city it can take a long time. You should be fine to apply for it now I would think :)

I applied in Winnipeg got told 4-6 weeks then drove to Selkirk (20 mins north) and got it the same day. Be aware that you usually can't get it done in a rural community unless you have a 'connection' there.

Do you have a connection in Selkirk? I know someone who works at the RCMP detachment there, and another one who did until about a year ago. Small world.

Just a FYI for those who are doing their police record check in Toronto. The process itself is much faster now. You can request a police check in person (by submitting a form) or online. For more details and the online forms, please visit http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/recordsmanagement/clearance.php

I dropped off my form at the police headquarters (on Yonge and College) on Wednesday, November 10 and received my Clearance Letter on Tuesday, November 16. Total cost $28.25. Now if only our visa application was that fast...

For people here in Montreal, there are only 4 places you can go, (not to any police station as I had thought). One's in Complexe Guy Favreau, I went to the CPIC on Jean-Talon just East of St-Laurent: http://www.recordcheck.ca/our-services/canadian-police-cpic-checks/

$40 and I had it 7 business days later. They're even open on Saturdays which comes in very handy.
