Hello,I think you just need to get her Philippine passport too. You can call Philippine Immigration so you can ask regarding dual citizenship.My kids were born and grew up here in Philippines but they have US citizenship and US passport because their biological dad is USC. I don't think you need to get her dual citizenship if she was born here. Call immigration for sure. here is the link:

If she already has Philippines passport, that would be fine and I guess she doesn't need to pay for dual citizenship or apply because that means she is dual already. But best to ask Immigration to make sure. Have a great day!

That is what I was thinking too, asiamom. If she has both passports, she's already a dual citizen. But it's better to check to make sure.

based on the FAQ on the link Armenia posted, it looks like if you naturalized on or after September 17, 2003, you do not have to do anything because you automatically become dual citizenship. you retain your Filipino citizenship.

It's best to read both RA9225 and the FAQs. Sometimes sentences and paragraphs on PH government websites are not properly worded. The two items enumerated above define who are considered natural-born citizens even though there's a second FAQ question right underneath it that asks "Who is a natural-born Filipino citizens? (sic)"

Section 2 of RA 9225 - Sec 2. DECLARATION OF POLICY - It is hereby declared the policy of the State that all Philippine citizens who become citizens of another country shall be deemed not to have lost their Philippine citizenship under the conditions of this Act.

What are the "conditions"? The answer is in Section 3.

Section 3 of RA9225:

Sec 3. RETENTION OF PHILIPPINE CITIZENSHIP - Any provision of law to the contrary notwithstanding, natural-born citizens of the Philippines who have lost their Philippine citizenship by reason of their naturalization as citizens of a foreign country are hereby deemed to have re-acquired Philippine citizenship upon taking the following oath of allegiance to the Republic:

"I _________________, solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines and obey the laws and legal orders promulgated by the duly constituted authorities of the Philippines, and I hereby declare that I recognize and accept the supreme authority of the Philippines and will maintain true faith and allegiance thereto; and that I impose this obligation upon myself voluntarily without mental reservation or purpose of evasion."

Natural-born citizens of the Philippines who, after the effectivity of this Act, become citizens of a foreign country shall retain their Philippine citizenship upon taking the aforesaid oath.

In summary - The condition which you have to satisfy to re-acquire Philippine citizenship is to take the oath of allegiance. That is why you have to go to a Phil consulate/the Phil Embassy.

My husband was naturalized (US) in 2007. He applied for dual citizenship this year. It took less than an hour, including the oath-taking (assuming you brought all required documents with you).

Check the website of the PH consulate nearest you to know what to bring and to download the form that you have to fill up.

A word of advice to everyone.

ALWAYS confirm what you read (on this forum, any other forum, any website, any magazine, book, etc., etc. unless your source happens to be peer-reviewed. Peer-reviewed, however, does not mean that the information provided will always be correct.). If at all possible, confirm with an official source. If a link is provided to an official source, take the time to read it yourself instead of relying on other people to read it and rephrase/explain it to you. Sometimes people (including me) make mistakes in understanding/interpreting what they've read so it's always best to read an official source yourself then ask help about interpreting it.

I met a Filipino immigrant in Canada who had questions about his child's Canadian citizenship (after Canada put into effect a new policy targetting absentee Canadians). I looked up the information for him, summarized it for him but also gave him all the official documents and told him to read them. He declined saying that what I've told him was enough. IMO, that's a poor attitude to acquiring information and knowledge which may have unfortunate repercussions.
