Hi everyone,

Can you help me on this question? I'm stuck.

Situation:

A friend of mine is here in the US via a J1-visa (with no 2years residency required). She wishes to stay She and I are friends, no direct relation or intention of marrying.

I am a US Citizen, can I sponsor her to stay in the US - on an immigrant visa?

I thought about applying for her from: J1 to F1 --> then to H1 --> Green Card (eventually).

I am not clear on how much I can do, since we are not related. Any help?

Yes, you may help her as being her sponsor if she applies for a F-1 visa. You don't need to be relatives in that regards.

Thanks Juliava!

Is there another type of visa I can sponsor her under? Going to F1 then H1 then GreenCard takes is a rather lengthy process.

Ideally I like to sponsor her to become a Green Card holder from J1 to GreenCard.

Her J1-visa category is "Trainee". What would be the BEST route to take to adjust of status her to allow her to stay in the US?

If you go on www.uscis.gov and read "how to obtain a Green Card" section, you will see that there is no other options at the moment, except political asylum/applying as a refugee. Obviously not all aliens are eligible for these programs.
