I'm all for Arizona's fight to maintain its sovereignty and protect its/our border. The feds should be shamed for trying to interfere instead of doing their job and backing up Arizona and enforcing order in immigration law, which, btw, was under state jurisdiction not so long ago.

+1, Gotta keep illegal folks out. Arizona is simply putting some teeth into the laws that already exist. Illegal immigrants need to do it nice and legal like all VJ people. 8^}

Your hypocrisy is shocking. You, a former immigrant from the Ukraine, have no sympathy for a person seeking a better life, much like yourself a few years back.

Great post, although I do not agree with all of your statements. Gary, by the way, is a natural-born US citizen. He just imported a lovely Lady from the Ukraine, so most likely he never experienced the economic hardship you mentioned.

I actually think every US citizen who wants to register to vote, should have to pass the same (currently very lame) civic and English tests naturalized citizens have to go through. More to the point, I think the citizenship should be more difficult, not easier. How can we expect people to decide on political issues, if they know nothing about politics, or this country's history. If they don't know what the Declaration of Independence is, whom we fought for independence and why? If they don't know who Washington was and what city in the US has been named after the first President? If they think Saddam Hussein was the King of Iraq, which is part of Saudi Arabia, which lies on an island east of America? I think immigrants should be able to demonstrate sufficient English skills before getting a Green Card.

We need an educated electorate, in order to counter the propaganda efforts of the right wing Christians and corporatists, who want to demolish any and all social achievements of the past in order to fill their koffers to the max. Retarded people should not be allowed to buy a gun, and intellectually challenged people should not be allowed to vote.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

A recent news article from the New York Times stated, “Opponents have called it an open invitation for harassment and discrimination against Hispanics regardless of their citizenship status.” I strongly agree with this statement because each state should be able to do what they want. The fact that President Obama criticizes the law due to the fact that it is unjust also proves that there are other possibilities to attack the illegal immigrants. The governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer needs to be the one attacked for initiating the law. Many objectors state that the idea of the Arizona Immigration Law is considered racial profiling. Aliens need to carry documents on them at all times. I believe that the police officers that assume certain people are illegal are just looking for a way to fill their day with time. Many people outside the state of Arizona have been hesitant to visit Arizona due to the fact that the Act SB1070 has been enacted. Although there are people that are for this immigration law, arguing “that there is a correlation between illegal immigration and crime.” The Obama administration and government should indeed repeal the Act because of its violation of civil and constitutional rights. Many illegal immigrants are being punished and sought for especially after the proposal of the new law. Racial profiling is degrading everyone who seems to look like they are from other parts, especially Mexico. It is important to know that many people, not just from countries such as Mexico are being targeted.

There was an incident at a local high school near a town I live in where a basketball team was invited to participate in a tournament in Arizona. Since the Arizona Immigration Laws were ongoing and current, the team decided to withdraw from the competition. Mainly because the high school in the area where they are from contains many individuals who are from Hispanic descent. This just goes to show that many people reject the idea of such strict laws because it proves be unfair. The idea of passing a tax could pose that we should wipe out the illegal people who hire illegal immigrants. We also have to keep in mind this idea that many people are putting forth is the identification system. Is it fair to carry around a record of where we are from just to prove we live in the land we were born? Since I have relatives that live in Arizona I should not have to feel harmed that there are police officers scoping the area for people that may look like they could have a green card on them. There definitely needs to be a new system to tackle this law. Since this law is targeting people and racially profiling certain individuals, it is important to go to the source, and accuse the businesses that house the illegal immigrants.

Mexico has pretty much the same rules and regulations as was proposed in Arizona.

Pot calling the kettle black?

So do most other countries, US is the odd one out.

Now I am not an immigrant, nor do I have an immigration status, but a forum is clearly going to be bias when everyone belonging to it has their immigration status below their posts. I have experienced the problem in Arizona first hand. I have family that has lived there and nowhere else. They have never wanted to move so bad over the past couple years. Immigrants are literally taking over Arizona. You can’t go anywhere without hearing someone speaking Spanish. Every construction worker is Mexican, even the contractors. This doesn’t mean that they are illegals by any mean, I am just making it clear that they are EVERYWHERE. When I went into a thrift store before the law was even established there, the cashier was speaking Spanish. The Arizona immigration law is a well proposed idea that not only imposes safety amongst Arizona, yet establishes efficient border protection.

The Arizona immigration law is considered the toughest immigration law in all of the United States. With Arizona being one of the main entry points for illegal aliens from Mexico, Arizona becomes swamped by immigrants. Police can detain anyone who they suspect is an illegal alien, arrest or fine the person if they fail to provide the U.S. identification, or arrest anyone who hires or transports undocumented workers. Immigrants must prove that they are allowed to be in the United States legally. The law is considered a dagger for anybody who looks like an immigrant because of all the racial profiling it will be leading to. However I think it is appropriate, especially with the high numbers of immigrants flooding into Arizona each and every day.

The Arizona immigration laws is not specifically out to get people. You have to think why and how it is protecting Arizona. Without the Arizona Immigration Law, drug cartels will be less detected making them more successful. We all know what rises when drug trafficking is currently happening. With Mexican smuggling already being a problem, crime rates will be higher. This doesn’t just affect Arizona, but potentially the entire United States. The hard part is getting the drugs into the United States. Who knows where they go after they are smuggled in. The Arizona Immigration law establishes a safer economy, protecting everyone’s well-being in the United States of America.

For Illegal aliens that do get caught in the United States, there should be harsher laws pertaining to them. Sending them back isn’t helping because they will just do it again and again. Harsher and stricter laws must go into this, or else nothing is going to be accomplished. This is why I support the Arizona immigration law. A country should be able to do what it wants and if that means requiring immigrants to carry their immigration credentials with them at all times, then I support it. It is better for the economy and the safety of the citizens in the United States of America.

Illegal immigration has become a major concern within this country today. The amount of crime that is committed by these illegal aliens is out of control and out economy cannot support them. The federal government has said that they are in charge of controlling the illegal immigration problem but they have not been successful. It is time for the states to start protecting their own citizens since the federal government has not been doing enough. It is the right of the citizens to call for reform when the government is not working in their favor.

The Arizona law was written after illegal immigrants murdered Robert Krentz, a prominent Arizona rancher. This killing started a major rally from citizens for a reform of illegal immigration laws. This is not a rare occurrence. Statistics show that on average twelve American citizens are murdered each day by illegal aliens. Arizona has just been the first state to enact a law to help protect their citizens. The out burst of people claiming that the law promoted racial profiling was escalated by the lawsuit the federal government filed against the state’s law. However, after reading the law the federal government discovered that nowhere in the law did it create an opportunity for officers to question someone based on their appearance. That section of the lawsuit was dropped. As soon as the federal government faces the fact they cannot fix the illegal immigration problem on their own and that they need state’s police help, is when citizens can expect to see positive steps toward fixing this issue. By saying that we should leave the “immigration folk” to deal with the illegal alien’s and have the police worry about other things is not right. Illegal immigration is illegal (hence the first part of the name). A policeman’s job is to arrest people that are doing something against the law. Being here illegally is against the law. If cops shouldn’t deal with illegal immigrants because we have a federal agency for that then cops shouldn’t bust people for narcotics then either since we have a federal agency for that. Illegal immigration is a problem. Over 80% of the warrants for murder are for illegal aliens in Phoenix, Los Angeles and Albuquerque. Many illegal aliens are here committing drug crimes. Many are not only breaking one law but multiple laws. In 1954 the United States implemented “Operation Wetback” that led to the mass removal of over one million illegal Mexicans from Southeastern America. I’m not saying this is the answer to our problems but it could come to this if the issue is not addressed soon on a countrywide scale.

Your hypocrisy is shocking. You, a former immigrant from the Ukraine, have no sympathy for a person seeking a better life, much like yourself a few years back. If you believe in what you are saying, then you failed to grasp the values on which our country was founded on when you took the oath to be a citizen.

Care and compassion for our fellow citizens brought us out of some of the worst times in our two hundred and thirty-four year history, even if it means sacrificing some of the money you have earned by paying higher taxes. I welcome anyone who cares to come into our country. Should they become citizens? Absolutely. However, resources need to be made readily available to them. An immigrant should not be faulted for lacking the money to pay for naturalization; financial reasons were probably what brought them to the country in the first place. The requirements for citizenship should also be more lenient.

At birth, or throughout our lives, U.S. born citizens will not lose citizenship if they do not know how to “read, write, speak, and understand” English (Source) or if they the lack the “knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of U.S. history and government” (Source). Taking the time to learn English or memorizing key points in U.S. history seems burdensome to someone just entering the country, wanting to earn money. If these standards cannot be changed, then resources need to be made available at little or no cost. The costs and time it takes to become a United States citizen is simply too much for many.

An immigrant must live in the United States for five years preceding their application for citizenship. During this time, they must maintain a green card. Afterwards, they may apply for citizenship, but only after they’ve been fingerprinted and paid the $675 application fee. If you were cash-strapped immigrant, what would you choose? A piece of paper for yourself proving citizenship, or a month’s worth of food for you and your family? And if you get caught as an illegal? A slap on the wrist, and a free van ride to the other side of the border. In the book Freakonomics, economists Steven Levitt, and Stephen Dubner argue that we live in an incentive-driven world. Every day we make decisions based on the incentives that may follow. As an immigrant, the incentives to stay in the country far outweigh the possible deportation that may follow. This is because our country believes in the power of people. If the government truly did not want immigrants, then every possible measure would be taken against them, possibly even as radical as your $500,000 “tax.” But the fact is, our country welcomes anyone who wants to give it a try; to strive for a house with a white picket fence, and a backyard that they can call their own and ultimately contribute back to the U.S.

Would you apply for citizenship in a country where a citizen told you to “jump off..the gravy train” and “run home?” If our country was based around the principles of your previous narrow-minded posts, then we wouldn’t be here today. I hope that you can learn to welcome people, especially when you were once working in the “slave labor” you previously referenced.

Wow. So many words, so little sense. You aren't even grasping the point Gary is making.

If true, it may slightly alter my previous statement, but my argument still holds merit.

Charles,

How can I determine that by simply looking at his profile?

i suppose knowing one's target rather than relying on profile information may be the best policy.

I'm not sure voting is that highly valued anyway. In an average federal election, less than half of eligible voters even bother to vote.

Sad, but a lot of people value their couch and their TV more than their right to vote.

Wow. So few words, so little sense. You aren't even grasping the point I am making.

I've provided a detailed explanation into why "Gary" is incorrect, and if he is an immigrant (or his wife is from what I am hearing), why he is hypocritical.

Because we are on a forum, I would expect you're response to be more in depth, of you're opinion, maybe describing my main points and why you disagree with them.

When taking part in a discussion and addressing a particular point of view that has been offered, it is beneficial to address the actual point of view offered rather than running off on a rant that has little to do with what you are apparently looking to respond to. Starting off and finishing up on false premises (both of which you've done) doesn't make for a strong argument either. So, go back and understand what you're responding to before actually responding. Or keep looking like a troll. Your choice.

AZ SB 1070 is a good law and the Federal government is/was badly mistaken in taking it to court. The law only seeks to allow State and local law enforcement to undertake duties abrogated by the relevant Federal bodies.

Anyone who thinks that penalties against businesses employing illegal aliens alone will solve the problem are sadly deluded. I agree that such action will be a major contributor to the resolving the situation, but on its own it will not accomplish the task.

We need penalties against the employers, we need to be able to identify, detain and deport illegal aliens and we need to secure the border. Any one part alone will not be enough. We need all of them in place and enforced.

And if the Federal government is unwilling to perform that duty, they need to allow State and local enforcement agencies to do so instead.

When it comes to boiling down what must be done, there needs to be more serious action everywhere. Since citizens especially in Arizona are getting attacked, the border as stated by Pooky, should be dettained greatly. This is a matter of a problem with the governments found in the states. I bet not only Arizona is going through consequences seen in SB1070. There are far more greater penalties that can be enforced, so the mix up of being encountered and asked for your identification will be stopped.

The Arizona law doesn't allow racial profiling at all. The federal government even agrees. the only reason why that comes up is because the liberal media makes it up to make people mad and be against the law. Even though its incorrect information. If you read the law, you see that it clearly states that a person has to be pulled over or cited for doing something illegal before the officer can ask any questions about citizenship.

yeah, and after pulled over, if you can't speak engish and you haven't a driver's license, there is reason to suspect even if you are white.
