I went to the AOS interview this past Friday morning and it went SO smoothly, TOO smoothly I think! Here is a quick summary. Arrived at the San Bernardino, CA office at 7:15, appt at 8am, called in at 8:05. We got a super nice lady. The only "couple" question she asked was where we met and to give her any documents showing we live together (we just gave her mail and our tax return). She asked the yes and no questions to be sure I'm not a communist, terrorist or prostitute, etc. Everything else was paperwork. She was about to give me the approval letter and stamp my passport until she saw my I-693 and noticed the doctor didn't do a certain portion!!! She tried her best but ended up having to file a RFE for the original and proper I-693 (Going to a different civil surgeon in Railto this time! I'm making sure they fill everything out!).

Anyways! To the point. I changed my name to my husband's last name, evidenced on our marriage certificate. I didn't change it on my SS though and I still have my maiden name on my ID. I applied my I-130, I-795, I-485 with my MAIDEN name (I asked my lawyer if this was okay since she did it that way and she said it was). When I was at the interview the IO asked me about this and was fine about it but on the RFE sheet she used my husband's last name, and of course my first name, under the beneficiary.

My question is this:

Which name should I put on the I-693???

How do they file the applications? I don't want her to not find my file because my last name on the I-693 is different than my I-485 and have them request another RFE, or be lost in the paperwork, or worse, get denied because of different names! Nooo! Advice??? I need this by monday morning, thank you!

You should have put your MARRIED name on the paperwork if that's the name you want to take. If you don't write your married name on the paperwork you'll pay $300+ to get a GC in your married name (that's the cost for a replacement), unless you wait till ROC or Naturalisation.

Your paperwork will find it's way no problem because you'll write your alien number in the i-693 AND you'll be including a copy of the RFE page when you send it.

I think it's too late to change your application to your married name now.. so you'll have to wait to get a new GC in your married name (either by waiting for ROC, Naturalisation or paying for a replacement). It also means you will HAVE to go by your maiden name on all official paperwork (like work etc) because your GC needs to match. You might not be able to change your SSN to your married name because your GC is in your maiden name and that's usually what they check it against (the SAVE system).

Thank you so much for the information! I'd have to change my name on the GC first before changing it in the SS system, got it.

I honestly would rather wait until ROC or naturalisation until I use my married name, it seems easier that way since I've been using my maiden name for everything else. I just have to be sure to use my maiden name consistently (work, taxes, leases, etc) until I change it in my GC and SS, correct?

Overall, it looks like I'll be using my maiden name on the I-693 form? Even though the RFE says my married name?

Sorry for all the double checks (and posting in the wrong forum), I just want to be sure because I'm so close!
