Good suggestions from everyone, we did all the same things but did not use an instructor (should have) Too many nights of "silent treatment"

And yes, Alla did MUCH better once she got her small car. She will not even drive the van anymore. I have to admit it is fun and easy to drive...like a go-cart, but hard to get in and out of.

We are using a driving school since I do not have the patience to teach. I tried but too much "Curb! Curb! Watch the curb". . .

I am convinced that a driving instructor was good for my health too (mental and physical).

I would concur and suggested that myself. Aside from the expense (money weel spent in my opinion) Alla wanted ME to teach her not "some stranger" I have found I am a pretty good driver but not a very good instructor, at least not for her. My teaching of the boys has gone MUCH better, but then, I do not sleep with them and FSU teenage boys are far less sensitive than FSU women.

Any one anywhere, is less strategically sensitive.

There WERE a couple nigths when I had to counsel myself..."Gary, it is OK, if you hadn't said that you would have been pried from between those two fire trucks...better to sleep on the couch than take the long dirt nap" She eventually got over it.

You may want to hold off on doing the repairs until after she arrives. Your new choices may not be the same as her new choices and it'd be a shame to walk into Home Depot one day and hear, "Oh, we should've had that color in our living room." Plus, it'll give you guys a chance to do something together and also make her feel included in the transformation process. She can build her own nest.

We rent an apartment here so there's not a whole lot of stuff we can do but believe me, my wife still did her best to spice up the decor.

Ditto that. I just had my place decorated before Vika and I comitted. My house was new, and fortunately she found most of it acceptable. I have read some really funny stories here about women who did not appreciate their guy's taste though. Gary even left his house mostly unfinished if I recall, and still had issues with the amount of work she had to do to get it the way she wanted. I would suggest you leave the old stuff, and be very careful about how much latitude you give her in replacing it too. Kharkovpoacher said "do whatever you want" to his lovely bride, and that statement can also be frought with danger.

VERY GOOD ADVICE. I was actually remodeling our home at that time and the deal was I did all the interior work and then PRIMED all the walls, I did not choose paint colors. I did do ceramic tile in the bathroom and sent photos of various tiles to Alla so she could choose the tile. The woman does all the color choosing, furniture selection etc. Just put your brain in neutral regarding that stuff. You get to paint and do the heavy lifting, preferably when she isn't home.

I thought I did so good but I was not prepared (and neither was she) for what an entire house looks like when it is only primed. No drapes, no curtain rods, no doorknobs even! It is very "white" and dull. She was not pleased that it took some months to actually paint and decorate all the rooms (hey, I have a life also, it isn't JUST painting, you know!) Not to mention ALL the furniture was BAD (I kind of suspected that) and the kitchen was completely unfurnished as far as she was concerned. I had been a bachelor eating tater tots, bratwurst and "goober Grape" for years and so ####### would I need with 3 huge covered frying pans??????

She DID like the bathroom tile!

After a year there, she decided living on the island was not so wonderful (I KNEW that before she arrived) and we sold that place and bought a new (new/old) house in "the city" and now we are doing it all over again! But things have progressed well and she is very happy here. VERY happy. She even...CAN YOU IMAGINE!...came home today with FOUR ceiling fans! (#######...you guys know how they are about moving air) and a garage door opener (she was "homeowning" again at Lowe's this morning) I asked about the ceiling fans and she said they were "On clearence" and she got all four for $25! So she figured "why not?"

So next weekend Pasha and I are putting in the garage door opener and 4 ceiling fans. Then in the summer she will tell me to turn the fans off!

lol Gary. well I don't get much choice in the floor covering since I am renting. I can put new carpet in but has to be a neutral color. I haven't bought a house because I was thinking I might share it with some one and she might decide she don't like it and I would have to buy another one.
