Foreign Couple Mocked in Maldives Wedding

A Swiss couple who thought they were renewing their vows in a tropical ceremony were actually the subject of vicious verbal attacks by the officiator, reports the AP.

In a video taken of the ceremony, the officiator chants in the local language, Dhivehi, in what would appear to be prayer. In reality, the resort employee is calling the couple "swine" and infidels, reports the Guardian. The paper quotes the man as saying:

The children that you bear from this marriage will all be ####### swine. Your marriage is not a valid one. You are not the kind of people who can have a valid marriage. One of you is an infidel. The other, too, is an infidel and, we have reason to believe, an atheist, who does not even believe in an infidel religion.

This is just sick, I'm glad the phoney-baloneys who pulled this prank have been arrested and the couple are going to meet the President of The Maldives. Some people are just sick in the head.

It is indeed outrageous. I hope there are not many of those morons out there. I feel sorry for the couple.

The ridiculous thing is that marriages are performed there, though not by these sickos, every single day. I can't believe it, I, too, feel sorry for the couple.

That is ridiculous, and oh so wrong. Saying that, why would you have a ceremony where you didn't understand anything that was being said? Maybe, subconsciously for me, it was because they were being mocked, but that couple imo looked like stupid schmos sittin there smiling away, and not knowing anything that's going on. Is that 'exotic' to renew your vows and just stand there and smile? I don't get it.

Silly tourists.

Dunno if this is PA to my comment, but I dunno about everyone else...but when I got married, I relished every word that was said, it had meaning and made the day what it was. To renew vows in a language one doesn't understand makes it pointless, imo,...unless it's just done for the 'oooh we renewed our vows in the Maldives, aren't we posh and exotic?' factor.

But if you were being sincere with your comment, ita, lol.

I agree, although I can also see it is a nice gesture to have the ceremony done in the local custom, including the language. I would have found a trusty interpreter/guide. They were being silly tourists. I can imagine the guy also bought a Rolex from one of the street vendors.

If only Al Gore was right, the Maldives would disappear with the sea level rise.

AlGore Akbar!! AlGore Akbar!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Shouldn't that be Ayn Rand Akbar, John. :P Atlas shrugged because he couldn't figure out this hostility towards Al Gore. If the robot's wrong I owe you a beer, if the robot's right, you owe me a Zodiac. :P

I didn't get it either. A marriage ceremony that neither the groom nor bride can understand is meaningless. They may as well had a clown do the ceremony.
