This seems like an obvious question: Why in the world do we wait 5 months for security clearance from USCIS and then, in many cases, have to suffer through another 30-90 days of separation (minimum) waiting for the FBI to do a "name check"?

There are many different databases that have to be checked. They don't all have the same information. And not every bit of information about a person is immediately available on a computer, some of it may still be in paper files in a cabinet somewhere (which is why it can take so long). There are court records, police records, FBI records, watch lists, military files... and a lot of these don't overlap. And if your name is in anyway popular, then they have to figure out which "John Smith" you are vs. all the other "John Smith's" out there.
