hi folks,

After sending our AOS papers exactly a week ago, which is today, I got text message with receipt #, and it says Official Receipt Notice (I-797) to follow in mail. so, what do we do with that number? what comes next? from what I searched there are I-797 and I-797C and E, I am still confused what they are.. I figured they are notifications for different stages of the process...? and why does it have limited time on it?

the only thing I am happy about is that they didn't return all of our papers right away - I guess we had all they needed.. at least for now.

That number you can enter into the status section of the USCIS website to check on your case or you can call USCIS for updates using your number. The I-797 is just verifying their acceptance of your application and putting you in the line to be adjucated. You might see it referred to on here as NOA1 (notice of action 1). Receiving this means that your paperwork did not have any terribly obvious mistakes but you still might be asked later for more paperwork, etc.

hi, thanks for the reply.

just now I tried to enter my receipt # and it didn't work. actually they sent 6 sms with three different numbers, 2 of them end with 40, the other 2 end with 43, and the rest of two end with 44.. I tried all of them and it didn't work. there are three capital letters that come before the numbers - do I put those letters to check the status? i tried without the letters with one of the numbers given but it didn't work.. I am confused.. what is this supposed to mean? or maybe I just have to wait for them to send us hard copy in mail with only one number!?!..

You probably have MSC as the first letters, that is part of your case number, it tells what service center your petition was submitted to. You will include that in any reference to your number. Sometimes it takes time to get the cases online. Try again in a few days. The three different numbers represent your three cases, adjustment of status, work authorization and advanced parole

aww, thank you so much!! i'm glad you were still online to answer my question, otherwise I wouldn't be able to sleep until I know what it is. yes, first letters were MSC. yes, I'll check it tomorrow or later on there.

thanks a lot again!

I see you got your green card like in 4 months the most!?! I just wonder, did you have any RFEs?

No RFE's at all through both our K-1 and AOS process. AOS ended up taking just under 3 months for us from date sent in to green card received in the mail.
