I think that kaydy457 is one of the many aliases of Agent Smith -- the one he uses to piss people off! ;)

In any case, thanks for clarifying about pet references. They do exist!

We are going to look at a couple of places today, more of an exploration of what's out there. My apartment complex wants $1800 for a 2-bedroom place (seriously). But they don't need the pet references. :) I guess we'll find out whether they are full of it or it's what's out there.

Holy ####### that's a lot of money!

You should look into buying something if you're going to be spending that much a month.

They're going through San Jose, so they're probably in the Bay area. $1800 for a two bedroom apartment in the Bay area is not out of line.

/California is expensive :(

You own a property, not the world.

Precisely why I screen all my own tenants and place all my own ads......There's an inherent disrespect for the rights of property owners in this country. We are mostly portrayed, and cast as villains.

I have no need for real estate people. They're primarily self centered and represent only their own interests.

As someone who ran a residential lettings department with over 50 properties under my control, I have probably screened more tenants than you will have in your lifetime. And you know what, unless I put good tenants in who paid their rent and looked after the property, I didn't get paid. So damn right I looked after my own interests - by looking after the landlord. If I put crappy tenants in, I lost business and cold, hard cash. I have represented more than one landlord in court, over property damage issues, rent arrears, sitting tenants who refused to leave even after court-ordered eviction notices. Never once have I represented a tenant; it's not where our loyalties as an agent lie.

There are also some appalling landlords out there, who unfortunately give the wrong impression of private renting to many potentially good tenants. You know, just like tarring all families with a young child with the same brush....

It's sad that you have so little idea what a good agent can do for you - one with the knowledge to help you in these circumstances, not hinder.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

Well, sorry you get pissed off. I suppose to relate to what I say you need to be a landlord and property owner.....Frankly, I get sick and tired of being characterized by most elements in this country as "appalling" and that seems to be ingrained in our culture.

As for RE agents. If you're a RE agent and you're not engaged in closing deals that mostly benefit you then you're no doubt engaged in some delusion.

Why else would you be in business?

If I put crappy tenants in, I lost business and cold, hard cash. I have represented more than one landlord in court, over property damage issues, rent arrears, sitting tenants who refused to leave even after court-ordered eviction notices. Never once have I represented a tenant; it's not where our loyalties as an agent lie.

I've had the displeasure of going to court twice due to deadbeats provided by RE agents.

Don't need them, don't want them.....

I think it's implying a reference from a previous landlord where you've had pets, so that they know you're a responsible pet owner :)

sounds like it

Not all kids are the same. Not all animals are the same. And NOT ALL RENTERS ARE THE SAME! There are plenty of responsible people out there who are renting an apartment (like us!) We look after the place and pay the bills on time and keep it cleaned to a reasonable standard of hygeine and don't let our cats make a mess of it, and our landlord is very happy with us. It would never occur to me to do any less.

When my brother and I were little kids our family moved interstate and had to find a rental place because our house had a 6-month closing... my mother often says that they went around to the rental agency in painting-the-house-clothes and they were told that no, there wasn't anything for them... so they went back in their best clothes and were given a list of choices. The lady who owned the house they wanted to rent said NO KIDS, so they took us over there to meet her and she was so impressed by our good behaviour and politeness that she said of course we could have the house... we were there for six months and no we didn't destroy it. We were taught to be respectful of other people's property...
