I have never been to Canada (seriously!), but I'm sure there are some very nice places near the beach with little or no rain and all year round temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees like we have it here in and around Santa Barbara. Healthcare is a million times better, the people are better educated (it can't be the other way around), they speak English and French (I like both), so I wouldn't mind living there . . .

Where in Canada could it possibly be between 65 and 85 degrees year round? Is this person being sarcastic?

The OP could move somewhere close to the border. I live pretty close to Detroit and flights are cheap out of there. Best of both worlds?

But if you maintain residences on both sides of border, then the tax-laws are a bulker-load of migraines. :P

Oh I meant both of them would live in Canada by the border. Then it would be easy for him/her to go back to the USA often.

Sounds like Saskatchewan------if one stays indoors, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Well, there was that private members' bill a few years back where they proposed bringing the Turks and Caicos Islands into the Confederation . . . it had lots of support, especially from Turks and Caicos, but alas - not enough votes to make it pass 2nd reading before it died on the floor. It would fit the above description, though, so maybe someone can re-introduce the bill to Parliament?

Oh, and many people consider parts of Florida the Canada of the South . . . without the healthcare, of course.

Well I have been from coast to coast in Canada and I have to say there are a ton of beautiful livable places there. We are both truck drivers so anywhere in Canada fits for us. Vancouver is quite lovely and Lake Michigan by Sault St. Marie is superb to say the least. I don't think we would maintain an address in U.S. but today we had a discussion of me applying for landed immigrant in Canada for me and the kids and he apply for U.S. status at the same time and we see which comes first.....

So you are wanting to immigrate to Canada or are you? Just replied to your most recent post that was unclear as well.

Seriously, you really need to pick which country you and your spouse are planning on living in. Immigration for both the US and Canada are lengthy and expensive processes and full of waiting, fustration, and hearthache as I'm sure everyone on this board will agree.

Applying for immigration to both countries at the same time isn't going to be looked at positively at the border when you try to cross. The intent of PR status in either country is for the person to "live in that country" and make their home there. Not to float back in forth. I personally, think you are in for more problems applying for both at the same time than what you think will be a "benefit" to which gets processed faster. It's not a race.

We would not try to immigrate to the US until much later. Not apply at the same time. We originally picked the US but it is just way too long of a wait. With looking at a hardship waiver it would be at least 18 months of immigration. So Canada did not win a race but rather it would be easier to immigrate me and the children which I have sole custody of. As it is now we have been waiting 9 months for a border waiver to travel to the U.S. since he submitted it to the U.S. border. So tacking on another 18 months would be too detrimental to the kids who he has been helping raise for three years.

My husband has been raising my son since we met so I know what you mean, time apart can be very disturbing to a childs emotional needs and stability.

Do whatever you feel is right, Canada is a wonderful place to live (there are bad parts in every country).

Wouldn't Immigration Canada still want their biological father's approval?
