I find this confusing since I have mostly just heard negative things about outsourcing.

It is confusing, and there is plenty of criticism of outsourcing.

But we live in a globalized economy in which economies all over the world compete for the ability to provide goods, services, and labor. It's pointless to ignore it or to attempt to prevent it - that's tilting at windmills. It's equally pointless to talk about the "unfairness" of it all. Who said opportunity had to be fair?

What is worth doing is being competitive, rolling up your sleeves, offering value to investors and customers. Innovation, a risk-taking entrepreneurial culture, a good work ethic, merit based progression, an educated workforce, efficient capital markets, a modern transportation/communications/power grid, efficient and effective regulatory climate, progressive taxation -- these are the hallmarks of an economy that can achieve prosperity in a globalized world where labor can be outsourced effortlessly. A society that prioritized these things will best be able to "protect" its domestic workforce.

... a modern transportation/communications/power grid ...

That's where I stopped reading. What utter socialist tripe! This is America, buddy. Not Canada. In this country, if you wanna get from NYC to DC, you better pray that a private company builds you an interstate highway to drive on. And you better pray another (or the same - monopoly regs are socialist too) private company polices said highway. Wanna take the train? F-ck you, commie! Go back to China where you belong. Oh and that Amtrak monstrosity? Only no good dirty socialists who think they're Europeons wanna travel with other people. Real Americans isolate themselves inside their cars and only communicate with each other via honking their horns and the occasional middle finger (especially here in jersey). Oh, and Twitter.

Oh and I almost to rant and rave about the power thing. Seriously? You think it's governments job to make sure power produced at Niagara is available in New Jersey? What happened to the pioneer spirit of America where every man was an island and women didn't count? You want power, generate your own! Just like a socialist, you want what others make. Pathetic.

We should be talking about fairness, although I agree that globalized labor markets are inevitable. Is it futile to demand that we place trade restrictions against countries that use child labor or slave labor? Are we not, in effect, propping up undemocratic regimes when we just turn a blind eye to such injustices? And then look at the fallout here in our own labor market. How do we compete against labor that is getting paid to do the same work for about $2 a day? Fairness is about looking at the bigger picture of the consequences when we don't demand fairness in the labor force, no matter where it is located.

Not so much for a big chunk of the workforce in this country - jobs that unfortunately, cannot be outsourced - service sector jobs. Should we tell them, tough sh!t?

And that would be awesome. I go there a lot less than I used to, but the people who work there strike me as bottom of the barrel. Stupid, lazy and callous. Robots would be a huge step up!
