I have no idea.

An A number is the number USCIS uses to uniquely identify the file of each immigrant who ever has a petition filed for them or who files for any immigration benefit.

I can't tell from your question which of you or your husband is the USC and which of you is the immigrant.

The immigrant has an A#, simply by virtue of the USC having filed a petition for them.

The A# is generally assigned to the immigrant during adjudication of the first petition concerning them. The A# is listed on the Notice of Approval, and on any other correspondence USCIS send the immigrant.

USCIS expect the immigrant to include their A# in any future correspondence the immigrant sends to USCIS.

Having an A# is a perfectly normal part of being an immigrant applying to USCIS for immigration benefits. It is nothing to worry about at ALL.

Did this letter say anything else?

If this letter is in addition to the approval notices for the I-129 I-130, it probably says more than just "You have been issued an A#". Perhaps it says that your approved petitions have been sent to the National Visa Center for the next step in processing? That would be normal too.

@Darnell,

this is the content of the letter:

The above petition has been approved. We have sent the original VISA petition to the Dept. of State National VISA Center,Rochester porthsmouth NH. NVC processing all approved immigrant VISA petitions that need consular action. It also determines which consular post is the appropriate consulate to complete visa processing NVC will then forward the approved petition to that consulate.

ok - that's the official 'approval notice'

and I think it's for the I-130 (not the I-129F)

check the receipt #'s from the FIRST I-797-C formletters,

one is for the I-130, the other is for the I-129F (I assume you are chasing after a K-3 visa, yes?)

then

check each receipt # with the approval notice, figure out which petition was approved (I-130 vs I-129F or both)

and

then let us know?

Thanks !

Just as a point of clarification, the A number is printed on the approval notice but is otherwise not directly mentioned. It is your A number for life.

NVC will automatically conitnue with CR-1 once the I-129F is administratively closed. You will not need to call NVC for this purpose.

hi,

Can i ask something? My husband received a letter from USCIS indicating that i have my alien number(me his wife) wat does it mean? tnx

You are getting a lot of opinions. All are good, but here is what's going on. I have been in your situation, and you are asking the exact question I had when I was at your stage of the process.

Just as a point of clarification, the A number is printed on the approval notice but is otherwise not directly mentioned. It is your A number for life.

This is 25% correct, in any other cases, not involving the simultaneous filing of both the 129f and 130 petitions.

An approved K3 petition will result in the issuance of an A# that appears on the NOA1 and NOA2. HOWEVER, an approved 130 petition will result in a separate a#.

The A# that subsequently becomes your greencard A# is the that one that you used to enter POE, the one that appears on your VISA, and the one that you use as the basis for obtaining the permanent residency..

My wife was issued an A# when she entered on a K3, she used this A# to obtain her driver's license. But the I 94 that was issued as a result of using the K3 visa had a validity date of 1 year. A year a later her driving license became inactive. During this time, our 130 petition was being processed. My wife later entered the U.S. using her IR1 VISA which had a different A#. I went into a bit of a panic as so many others have advised the each person was limited to one A#. This is incorrect in the case of 129/130 being filed together.

After entering the U.S., we took the new A# to reinstate my wife's driving privilege. A week later, she was issued a social security card and 10 days later a greencard.

Bottom line is, do not assume the A# will become your permanent greencard number unless it is your intent to use the current petition as the basis of your subsequent VISA to enter the U.S and the basis of your permanent residency.

If you plan to follow through with K3 ( and if you are ALLOWED ) then the A# on your NOA1 an NOA2 will become your permanent Alian #. However, if you plan to follow through with your 130 petition, then wait for a second A# to be issued. However, while the A# for the 129 can be issued with the NOA1 and NOA2, the 130 A# won't come into the scene until your petition has reached the consulate/embassy processing stage.

Hope this helps.

@SpSguy,

in other words the A# in my 129F is different to my I130? since the 129F is administratively close so the A# in my I130 will be my permanent A#... tnx for the info:-)

YES

Had my wife entered the U.S. under her K3 status, and had she adjusted status, then and only then would her 129 A# become her permanent A#.

In cases where the 129 are administratively closed, the 129 A# is moot since you won't be using it to enter the U.S.
