As for container gardening it, I don't see why not. Large enough tub and taking care of it should work just fine. I did tons of container indoor gardening before moving.

You could grow rhubarb in a teaspoon.. :P

Well yeah, but from the sounds of how much Nizzy wants to eat I doubt a teaspoon will do it. ;)

Hey! I'm eating for two! lol I have a sour tooth...my mom made pickled veggies for me and she instructed me to leave them be for a little while so they can soften a little but I got into them the second she turned her back...

Heh, it wasn't a value judgement! Rhubarb is pretty healthy for you, so even eating a lot for one isn't that bad! :)

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

buy $10 worth of rhubarb and $40 worth of other things you need.

the stuff on there isn't always on sale and we usually shop with coupon at inexpensive places and we look for bargains. So while that idea popped into my head I just can't see myself spending 40 bucks every time I was rhubarb.

good point!

My mom has a lot so my wife picked some. But doesn't know what to do with it :) It's very very sour.

You only eat the red stalk part.

as kids we would eat it raw and dunked in sugar

here is the recipe for my mom's ......

"Rhubarb Crumb Crust Cake with Meringue"

Crumbs:

3/4 cup margarine

2 tbsp white sugar

2 cups flour

Rub above ingredients into crumbs and press into a greased and floured 9 by 13 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Filling:

2 cups sugar

6 egg yolks (save egg whites)

3/4 cup milk or cream

4 tbsp flour

1/8 tsp salt

Mix above ingredients and pour over 6 cups rhubarb. Pour rhubarb over crust and bake for another 45 minutes. Beat the 6 egg whites, just stiff. Then add 3/4 cups white sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat stiff. Spread over top of rhubarb. Brown in oven. WATCH CLOSELY!

Here is another good Rhubarb recipe...

Rhubarb White Chocolate Coffee Cake

2 1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

Pinch salt

3/4 cup unsalted butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup sour cream

2 cups diced rhubarb

Combine the first 4 ingredients. Beat butter with sugar until light. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add the flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with sour cream and stir by hand just until combined; do not over mix. Stir in rhubarb.

Topping: Combine 3/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 3 tablespoons butter, melted. Gently stir in 1 cup chopped white chocolate (about 6 ounces).

Spoon half of the batter into a greased 9 inch spring foam pan. Sprinkle with half of the topping. Spoon in remaining batter. Sprinkle with remaining topping. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes, or until cake springs back gently. Cool before removing sides.

Oh, I love stewed rhubarb! Haven't had any in a long time - maybe I will have to plant some for next year. Have you tried looking in the frozen food sections of the grocery store? Sometimes they have frozen rhubarb available - or frozen rhubarb or strawberrry/rhubarb pies. That might be an option until you find some. Good luck!

We have one growing in our backyard.

Doesnt take talent to grow rhubarb either.. very easy and will never go away

That's for sure. A friend gave me a couple of plants from his garden over 20 years ago and it still comes up every spring in the same spot... even though I have pulled it all out a few times in the autumn. It never dies.

If you grow your own in the midwest, it's nicest in the spring. That would be the time to freeze some of it for later. It will keep growning all summer but it gets woodier and more bitter.

This thread might flop but even if I could get ONE response on where to find rhubarb in chicago it will be worth it. I have been having mad cravings for some and I can't find it ANYWHERE. The only place I came close was online at peapod.com but you have to order 50 dollars worth of stuff and pay for delivery and all that and while I think it's a good investment, hubby doesn't think I can consume 50 bucks worth of rhubarb.

You're in Chicago and you're complaining you can't find Rhubarb? You're in the midwest...I bet if you asked around, you can find it. My mother grew up in Missouri and they had plenty of it growing up...she even tried to force Rhubarb pie down my throat when I was younger.
