Applying for OPT

Hi,

I am in contact with my International Student Advisor and we are starting my OPT application and the OPT will start in Feb. 2011.

I understand all the rules that I have 1 year after that to work in the US, can't be unemployed for more than 3 months etc.

Are there any 'catches' to the OPT? For example, will I be required to leave the US for an X amount of time after the OPT expires?

I've consulted a US Immigration lawyer and he told me that there is a good chance that after the OPT I can switch to a work visa and later (in a few years) to AoS i.e. green card.

I'm planning on going down that route, so I just wan't to be sure that there aren't any 'catches' so to speak.

After your OPT expires, if you do not have another visa you must leave the country within 30 days.

If you can use your OPT company to sponsor you for another work visa, you may do that. Otherwise you must leave

After starting of ur OPT period you must have to get any job in ur field within 3 months. You need to do register your OPT with your school within 3 months. If you are lucky and you got a job in a high compny and if they are willing to sponsor for ur H1 visa then you will get ur H1 visa. After that you can do AOS. But after completion of ur OPT period if you dont have any job or your employer is not ready for ur H1 visa sponsor then you have to leave US or get some other visa options.
