While it's "normal" that anybody would want to get that stuff out of the way as soon as possible, there's absolutely no problem in filing just 6 weeks or a month before the Green Card expires. None. Nada. Nilch.

That's what logic says, but logic and USCIS do not always mix, so it's a safer bet to check here what others think.
