While I was on a US visit visa in the States, My husband got me on his BC/BS coverage, and it's 160 biweekly more for me to be added on. (health, Eyes, Dental) I thought it was a perfect rate since I had gone to a doctor once before I was put on his plan and it cost me almost 300 dollars for one visit. I get sick a lot more frequently than my husband. I'm back in Canada again waiting for the interview now though. :)

But my husband has a very low rate bi weekly as well because he goes in for medicals. We get a wonderful low rate because neither of us drink or smoke at all (never have) and that we're not overweight/obese. People complain why it's so high for them, but those kind of factors give a higher risk of you needing to be taken care of! (Plans covering their own butts)

And yes, I am Canadian, and I hate it when people think our health care is 'free'. It definitely isn't. You pay about the exact same as you would in most places in the states as you would in Canada in taxes.

Get a job and get covered. Then you wont have to be worried about costs.

It is most DEFINITELY worth 300-400+ dollars a month to be covered.

Makes sense, but to get a job and get covered, I need the EAD, and so does the op... We'll keep knocking on wood until then I guess! What insurance company does your husband deal with if you don't mind me asking?

The rate that your husband is getting sounds like his employer pays for most of his coverage and then only 25% of the coverage for his spouse/family. That's a family rate - I highly doubt that its because you are female. My employer has the exact same family rate pricing. Some employers pick up more of the family costs, but many don't. Like the others have said, $430/month is not great, but it's nothing compared to paying tens of thousands if something were to happen to you and you have to go tot he hospital. It's the reality of living in the US.

In technical terms yes you loose it but not necessarily. My husband is a duel citizen and he still has OHIP coverage and has used it for years with no problems, but his situation is complicated, also to a job reason, he is still soley considered a Canadian Resident, with the visits within the six month period he does not loose that OHIP. Ontario health care is mostly funded through private enterprises, which means that 75 percent of the serives are delivered privatley by funded publicily. Part of my hubby's income and protection comes from ACTRA, which provides his private insurance and protection through the union. As for me I will probably loose it, I am covered now under my hubby's insurance, but because I am also not a US citizen that could go hand in hand. As for my daughter as well, she is duel, I am not sure if she still has it or not i'd have to look into that, she is fully covered under my hubby's plan.

A temporary solution to the health care coverage issue that is more affordable is Travel Insurance.

I've never seen employer coverage work like that. Normally the rates are something like:

Employee rate

Employee+spouse rate

Employee+spouse+1 dependant

etc.

You might want to look into catastrophic coverage for a few months until you can get your own coverage.

My husbands insurance covers me and I'm still Canadian. It's a minimal rate extra to what he'd pay as a single beneficiary of the health insurance. It could just be my husbands work but he said that it wasn't uncommon to have a out of Country person on the Insurance. I have had no issues/ ungodly payments for health care here. I get my medication now in the US as I'm no longer covered in Canada. My husband just brings it with him when he comes to visit.

I guess I'm shocked that it would be 500$ extra.
