Why are homosexuals a protected group? There's nothing in the TOS that explicitly suggests they are.

Certain definitions of demographic group include only races, genders, and ages.

Good question, if you had a room full of people and examined everyones sex history you would find a wide variety of arraignments both in bed and in cohabitation.

Why would just one preference and one preference only be bless with protection?

If it was against the rules, the mods would have it blocked out, along with other words they already do have blocked...

mods don't block words - site admin (ewok, the fuzzy one, hallowed be his name) is the one that makes additions to the word filter.

"For instance" is good enough for me. I realize that this isn't an complete list. All the same, it's safe to say that not all groups are protected. Rapists, for instance, are likely not protected. Similarly, politicians are typically not protected on VisaJourney. Or even political parties. Typically, there have been no complaints about broad verbal assaults on various different broad demographic groups.

OK, so you're good with "for instance".

How about "or"? See the word bolded below and re-evaluate your fixation with the word demographic.

Post Content intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against a broad demographic
or
group of people identified by a unifying trait or characteristic (discrimination), including but not limited to racist or sexist content.

Homosexuals are a "group of people identified by a unifying trait or characteristic", are they not?

Then so are heterosexuals, hermaphrodites, et al.

If people are looking to get pedantic, then maybe we need a clear list of each "group of people identified by a unifying trait or characteristic", to stop all the real bickering and get back to the petty and annoying stuff.

I agree. The "unifying trait" part does need to be fleshed out. Either that, or it needs to be removed.

So are you saying that the unifying trait for all homosexuals, heterosexuals, hermaphrodites is that they need to be naked?

:ot2:

Personally, I think that the phrase needs to be removed, because getting more specific will just lead to problems for those not covered by amended wording. Some may disagree, but I'd leave it to the mods and work based on a determination of the intent behind any derogatory comment. This removes the limitations that could be imposed by more specific wording.

They're certainly disparaging. I assume the mods interpret "unifying characteristic" as being a characteristic one is born with or otherwise has no conscious control over. But that is not made explicit in the text of TOS.

Personally, I agree with Pooky on removing that text completely. I would just make it against the rules to be rude. And yes, I do realize how rude I frequently am.

Same reason Canadians are a protected group.
