Hello everyone!

In May 2010 my parents (and three other family members) applied for tourist visas to come visit my husband and me. We wanted to have a wedding ceremony because when we initially got married my family wasn't here in US. All five of them were denied without looking at any of the documents that prove their ties to Ukraine.

I still want to try to get my parents to come visit next year so that they can meet my husband's family and we finally have some kind of ceremony. I know that there is a chance for denial again. In this regard, a few things to mention. First, my parents went to Prague and Germany this summer and it was their first Schengen visa, which they obviously didn't violate. So we are hoping that next year when they apply, that will make a little difference.

Second, my husband and I would like to inquire with the local Congressman and see if he/she can help. Has anyone done it? Could you advise how? Do you know if the congressman office can inquire with the Kyiv consulate directly. I am just afraid that if the congressman issues some letter of support, kyiv officer will refuse to look at it, as their policy changed and now they don't have to review your paperwork.

Thanks in advance.

When your family applies it is on them to prove that they are not trying to come here to stay. The assumption is that they will come and overtstay. ( same assumption everywhere ) They most show over whelming ties to your home country. Getting visas for the whole family at one time is nearly impossible in some places , leaving children behind shows a need to return. There isn't anything your congresman can do to aid this.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

It might be easier to organise a blessing in Ukraine, then everybody who missed the marriage can attend.

The issuance and compliance with the Shengen visa could help. The EU is about as stingy with those as the US is. If you want to ask your congressman, the best way is to go to his local office. Officially he can do nothing. On the other hand, a letter of reference from a US Rep can't hurt.

They are looking for evidence that they will return to Ukraine, that is it in a nutshell.
