Hey guys! I am about to schedule my interview for December.. Waaah!!! I just have a couple of questions before I plunge into this exciting and life-changing process!

I have all my documents ready now..

Once I call for my interview, what happens next? Do I wait for something to be mailed to my home so I can pay the fee at the bank?

Once I schedule it, how soon can I go for the medical?

What do I need to bring during the medical exam??

Also, when they ask for visa pictures, how many should I have in total, and do they mean immigrant or non-immigrant visa photos?

Last, I keep hearing different things on whether my fiance will be able to be present for my interview or not. He is coming so he CAN be there if its allowed. I know someone who's fiance was present for the interview, and I also know people who said they couldn't be there!!! What's the real deal??

Thanks guys, please respond!!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

You will receive an e-mail with your appointment date/time. The same e-mail will have all of the docs you need for the interview. Once you have this e-mail, you can attend the medical.

As for fiances at the interview, it is entirely up to the Consular Officer whether or not they are allowed in the interview.

Good luck on your interviews, and best wishes for a happy future!

I attended my fiancee's interview in Manila this past June. When I was there, they allowed all US citizens into the embassy (and as far as I know the interviews as well). Our paperwork was in good order, and although I'm sure she would have passed without me there, it certainly did help her anxiety level. The interview was no problem, very easy really. I had "front-loaded" our application with some evidence and they only asked for photos at the interview. Just relax, and make sure you have all the evidence you can, in case they decide to ask for it.

Once I call for my interview, what happens next? Do I wait for something to be mailed to my home so I can pay the fee at the bank?

Shortly after you call the Embassy call center and schedule your interview, you will receive an email from the call center which includes your interview date and time. Print out this interview confirmation because you will need to show it to manang gaurd at St. Lukes when you go for your medical, and you will also need to show it to manong guard when you go for your interview.

Once you receive your interview confirmation email, you need to gather all of the documents you will need for your interview. You will need your NBI clearance, your CENOMAR, your annulment documents (if any), two copies of your DS-156 and DS-157, and one copy of your DS-156K. You will also need your fiancé's I-134 and its supporting documents. You also need to bring updated letters of intent to marry from both of you. And you should bring updated proof of an ongoing relationship. Chinook took an extra copy of our entire K-1 packet. Make sure to make an extra copy of everything in case the Embassy loses something. I hope I'm not forgetting any of the requirements. I hope others will chime in.

If I were in your shoes, I would pay the visa fee after I passed my medical.

Once I schedule it, how soon can I go for the medical?

You can complete your medical at any time, just make sure you complete it at least one week before your interview.

What do I need to bring during the medical exam??

Click here to read about the medical exam.

Also, when they ask for visa pictures, how many should I have in total, and do they mean immigrant or non-immigrant visa photos?

Make sure you get lots of official passport-size pictures. You will need to submit more pictures during every step of your visa journey...the medical...the interview...the CFO...Adjustment of Status (AOS). I forget exactly how many you will need, but I think it's a good idea to have at least 12 or more pictures.

Last, I keep hearing different things on whether my fiance will be able to be present for my interview or not. He is coming so he CAN be there if its allowed. I know someone who's fiance was present for the interview, and I also know people who said they couldn't be there!!! What's the real deal??

Most K-1ers are allowed into the interview cubicle with their sweetheart. I have heard of a few spouses who have not been allowed inside the final interview.

Thanks guys, please respond!!

Walang anuman po...and good luck with the rest of your visa journey! :star:

You will receive an e-mail with your appointment date/time. The same e-mail will have all of the docs you need for the interview. Once you have this e-mail, you can attend the medical.

The CR-1 interview scheduling procedure is different from the K-1 scheduling procedure. K-1ers must call the Embassy call center in order to schedule an interview appointment. The call center tells the K-1er which dates are available and the K-1er chooses the date they want.

So do I understand this correctly, I should pay the visa fee AFTER the medical exam?

You can pay the visa fee at any time. However, why not pay it after you pass the medical? If you are required to undergo a two-month TB culture at St. Lukes, you will be able to keep the money in your pocket for those two months.
