Chen Wei-yih has posed for a set of photos in a flowingwhite dress, enlisted a wedding planner and rented a banquet hall for amarriage celebration with 30 friends.

But there is no groom. Chen will marry herself.

Uninspired by the men she's met but facing social pressureto get married, the 30-year-old Taipei office worker will hold the receptionnext month in honor of just one person.

"Age thirty is a prime period for me. My work andexperience are in good shape, but I haven't found a partner, so what can Ido?" Chen said.

"It's not that I'm anti-marriage. I just hope that Ican express a different idea within the bounds of a tradition."

Her T$50,000 ($1,623) wedding comes after online publicitythat has netted 1,800 largely sympathetic comments.

"I think there will be more and more girls likethis," said "divagirl," who did not elaborate.

Taiwanese women are marrying later and less often as theireconomic status advances, fuelling government concerns about a drop in thebirth rate and its impact on productivity.

Only 40 percent of women surveyed earlier this year by theeducation ministry said they imagined married people could live better thansingles, local media said.

"I was just hoping that more people would lovethemselves," said Chen, who will go on a solo honeymoon to Australia.

Chen said her mother had insisted on a groom at first butlater jumped aboard the solo marriage plan.

But as Chen cannot officially register a marriage toherself, if she finds a man later she will wed again.

"If I had a steady boyfriend, I wouldn't do this,"Chen said. "it would be offensive to him, anyway."

This story reminds me of one of the best single-panel comic strips that I ever saw. Couples in small boats are floating through the Tunnel of Love. The toll-taker asks the lone resident of a boat "One ticket again as usual, Narcissus?"

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I can imagine the honeymoon in Australia.

She walks into a bar & the Aussies chat her up

and ask if she's there on business or pleasure... :P

She can tell the truth & tell them all she's on her

honemoon but her hubby is "indisposed" and

could they do the honors?

Nope. I can't even get her to touch herself as part of our love making. She was taught and actually believes it is a huge sin to do so.blink.gif
