Us filipina's use our moms maiden name for middle name and our our dad's last name when we are single.

Now that we are married, I believe our middle name should be our Dad's last name and our last name should be our husband's last name.

Example: Your name when you were single was

Jane Balansag Adelan

Your married name now will be

Jane Adelan Browning OR Jane A Browning

That's how I did mine.

Hope it helped ;) Cheers x

You can change your name to whatever you like. In the U.S., by convention, your maiden name is replaced with your married name once married. Your middle name remains the same. OTOH, in the Philippines, once married the woman's maiden name become her middle name.

My wife had to explain this when she applied for her driver's license. Initially, they had her name as First Middle Married. She told them that that wasn't her name...it was First Maiden Married and furnished a copy of the marriage certificate. She was issued her driver's license according to Filipino convention. She then was able to use her state-issued I.D. to apply for SSN and, eventually green card, in that name.

Hope this helps.

What did you put in your application for the marriage license? I think your marriage license/certificate will still reflect your maiden name. I have a friend who also dropped her maiden last name, and used her mom's maiden name as her middle name. However, when you fill out legal documents and sign your name, be consistent as different names used may pose some difficulties with your identification. In my case, what's listed in my marriage certificate is still my maiden name. I used my maiden [last] name as my middle name. All of my legal documents (SSS, passport, etc.) reflect my [married] last name. Hope that helps you a bit.

At the time you get married in the U.S., you have the opportunity to legally change your name. You are allowed to change your name to anything you want. You legally change your name when you fill out the document for the marriage certificate. You simply write your new name on the document.

For example, when you got married, you legally could have changed your name to:

> Jane Adelan Browning...<---Chinook used this method.

> Jane Balansag Adelan-Browning.

> Jane Balansag Browning-Adelan.

> Jane Balansag-Adelan Browning.

The clerk at the courthouse (florida) simply asked my wife what she wanted her new married name to be. Like many of the other posters have said, my wife moved her maiden last name to her new middle name. Her old middle name was just dropped.

We're in a similar position. I dropped my last name and kept my mom's maiden name.

When I was single, it was M A C F L

Now, it's M A C F P

I'm going to get my SSN next week. When I was at the clerk's office, I was told that what ever I listed down as my married name will appear on the license. Maybe you can call the and inquire about that.

Hello Robbie Jeannet have a nice day to you, I just finished reading your post here and I found out that I have the same problem as you have. Last month I applied an SSN but it took a month to have my ssn on mail, but I was so sad to know that in my SSN my middle name the time I was single is the same I have in my SSN , that supposed to be it must be my father's name as my middle name since I am already married. I want to know if you made it since you posted it last 2009 and we are 2014 now. please tell me and I will appreciate to have your response. thank you and GOD bless you and your family.

Still it is useful knowledge. Candy has expressed a desire to follow that tradition when we are married.

I understand there is a proecedure to file a report of marriage with USCIS to update their files to her new name, but i am not quite sure how that works.
