First trip I made by myself:

Expedia.com - cost me 1700 but brought the ticket about 3 weeks in advance. This was for a flight from jfk to narita to cebu.

Second trip i made:

http://www.china-airlines.com/en/ - cost me 1300 for myself and my almost 2 year old son. this is from JFK to MNL purchased 2 months in adavance.

http://www.philippineairlines.com/home/home.jsp - cost me and my son about 50 bucks.

http://www.kayak.com/

good tool for comparison shopping, but before you buy always check with the carrier online as they sometimes run discounts that sites like expedia and kayak dont pick up.

I have yet to find a travel agent that could get me a flight for myself and my son for less than 1400 bucks. so i purchased a ticket straigh to manila from china airlines as they run online discounts and then i purchased a flight that leave 2 hours after i land in manila from phillipine airlines. I saved a BUNCH of money.

A Filipino friend of mine recommended a place called Star Tours, and I've used them twice in the past year. Both times they were able to get me better availability at lower fares than I could find on the web. Ask for Vicki - vstartours@integra.net

Just a thought, you might want to consider changing your travel time. Besides x-mas, summer time (in u s), is the most expensive time to travel to the philippines. I have been traveling back and forth for 6 years and the only time I have spent over #$1,100 for a ticket is when I went in Jun/Jul. You can save much more money changing travel times than any travel agency can save you. Go to sites like BT Store, traelocity, etc and just search for different months. When more than one is traveling, it can make a huge difference. I have to buy three tickets now, so I travel when the ticket prices are right.

I have to agree on the travel dates/months. I paid less than $1000 for a RT trip JFK to MNL for a late January trip & for that safe trip at the end of June, I paid about $1400.

That is a steal-of-a-deal! Congratz.

I just don't know if it is possible to get that one again anytime soon.

Like the OP said, air-travel prices have skyrocketed.

All the major airlines made a profit this qtr, so maybe this emboldens them to raise prices.

Cathay Pacific is the airline that I use when I travel to Asia & also the airline that I paid less that $1000 for a trip JFK to MNL in January.

Also keep an eye on their deal of the month (on their website under offers & promotions). Also their ALL ASIA Pass is great for people who want to do multiple stops (travel to different countries/cities in Asia).

FYI, as for the price being $50 more on the weekend, midweek travel is usually cheaper than weekend travel - that goes for just about all airlines.

I have been to the Phils 3 times and each time I started searching for fares at least 2 months prior to my travel date. Each time NorthWest Airlines had the best fare compared to other airline web sites or any of the sites such as orbitz or priceline.......... I could have got a little cheaper fare if I departed from California (LA or San Fran) but I live on the east coast and from the east coast round trip to California and back to SC drove the total price way above the cost from Northwest. The airplies from California did not fly anywhere near where I live. Northwest from SC to Detroit to Narita, Japan to Manila. Now Northwest has become part of Delta airlines.

We are planning on traveling back next July and I will search as I have always but do not anticipate getting a fare lower than one of the major airlines that services the city where I live. Our final destination is Mindanao. I purchase my ticket ahead of time for the final leg to my destination on Philippine Airlines web site since I fly the following morning upon from Manila to Mindanao. The lowest fare was 1,200 and the highest was 1,400. I expect to pay more this trip due to the ever rising fares of the airlines. :ranting:
