What are you using for a reader? How many gb per month? Discuss your experiences.

I used to use it long ago. I used Newsbin as my reader and Gigganews as my provider. Since I started using torrents I gave up on the usenet. Not much there anymore.

Actually, I guess I have to download Linux a few times, but I really don't know anything about torrents, what's safe, what's available, etc.

It's just as safe as any other method or source of data. It's the integrity of the source of the data that is important. I would say that the first thing you need if you're going to start downloading torrents is peerblock. You don't want the pesky RIAA or MPAA sending nasty letters to your ISP to get your internet shut down.

Please remember that advising people how to break copyright or illegally download copyrighted material is a violation of TOS. RIAA and MPAA send those 'pesky emails' to people who have violated copyright:

Post any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret or other proprietary right of any party (the "Rights"), unless you are the owner of the Rights or have the permission of the owner to Post or transmit Content.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I didn't advise anyone on anything

They send letters to those whom they suspect of violating copyrighted material. That is a big distinction. They don't send the emails to ISP's because they can prove that someone is downloading copyright material. If they had that proof, they go to court. If you download a lot of material, you are bound to get a letter from your ISP, merely because of the volume. Downloading using torrents is perfectly legal. If you download a lot, you should protect yourself.
