Hey,

I came here from J1 visa. Now I'm in grace period even though my program is over already on 10/19/2010.But I'm still in status since we have 30 days more after the program. So I'm supposed to leave the States by 11/19/2010.Right now I'm applying for AOS.They ask me about my current USCIS status and expiration on the form.So should I write "exchange visitor" and 11/19/2010 or something else? Please help. Thanks

Hi,

I was in the same situation, I got married and filed the AOS during the grace period of my J1.

In the box "current USCIS status" I put "exchange visitor" and on the expiration date I put the end of the end of the J1 (08/20/2010) and not the date of the end of the grace period (09/19/2010).

I remember I had trouble sorting this out also, since I didn't want to file an application with an "expired status" but I asked USCIS at an Infopass appointment and they told me to do that. Also, they strongly advise to file the AOS before the end of the grace period, which I did, and it looks like you are going to do so as well.

So far, I haven't gotten any RFE, it looks like my AOS is following a regular process (NOA, biometrics appointment etc)

I hope this help.
