The law states that anything that stimulates the genetalia is prohibited.

Does that include spouses?

I think if they had their way spouses would be banned! Here is a link that explains more about the law:

I went to a baptist Christian school for 2 years---it was horrendous! Legalistic doesn't even begin to describe it. (my parents didn't even make me go, I wanted to because my friends went there  and someone else paid for us to go)

I went to a Baptist school for a while too..... had a falling out with the teachers once... they told me I couldn't wear pants to school... I asked why?... they said because girls are not supposed to wear boys clothes... I said, "didn't men wear dresses when that was written?"

They didn't like me much

:P Yes, I also have stories. Well at our school girls always had to wear skirts, except on dress down day. Those 2 years (9th and 10th grade) were very memorable, in a very funny yet scary way. Me and my friends definitely bonded closer because of going through it together. Yet I still had some of the most fun times of my life during that time.

One funny story is one day in the cafeteria(which was really small) these 2 girls who were rivals got in a fight. One girl walked in the lunchroom with a can of spam and a plate, sat down near me, opened the can and plopped the spam on the plate. We were like, what the heck are you doing?? She then got up and threw the plate of spam on the other girl, which turned into a lunchroom chase between the two with some punches thrown. Crazy people. By the way probably 1/3 of the kids in the school were so bad they got expelled from every public school in the county, so they ended up at that school as their last option. Explains a lot.

As someone who was raised baptist (in Canada), I'd just like to second the emotion that not all Baptists are bad! However, it seems like we all get lumped into the same category as Southern Baptists, who do have the reputation of being --how can I put this nicely-- extreme.

The letter quoted the first epistle to Timothy: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

Correct me if I'm wrong here those of you that know more about this than I do but aren't the epistle's letters from those particular people, not the word of God or Jesus but the thoughts or letters in this case to (or is that OF) Timothy?

Sorry bout that. I didn't really mean all, but near Yarmouth where I grew up there was a baptist church that was just as bad as the southern baptists.

and as a note of interest.... 90% of the members of that church were worth well over $1 million.

there others than can explain it a lot better than i can. but here is the gist of it. jesus came to the world. he had disciples. for 300 years christianity was spread via word of mouth. recollections/stories where wrriten down in books/letters about Jesus and christianity. a bunch of them. eventually some ppl started collecting them and making a book collection... i thnk the word bible actually means a collection of books. so, anywho, some christians( roman catholic leaders) who where guided by the holy spirit eventually decided which book/stories/letters where really the word of god and thus making the official bible.

so there you have it. in a nutshell.

I don't know much about baptists .... let alone southern baptists. There were only a few baptists churches back home in my city that I can recall and I knew of people that went to them. They seemed nice to me.... *shrug*

The matriarch of our church was a sunday school teacher for over thirty years... and then they got an insane minister who was big on that 'no women shall be allowed to have authority' blah blah BS and she was told to stop. What staggers me is that she went along with it willingly, and never raised her voice in church again. She mentioned it to us one day when we were talking to her and I thought it's very sad... here's a lady with decades and decades of experience and wisdom (she's 72) - her husband was a minister, two of her sons are ministers, and her third son is the church Elder - her family kept the doors open on the church when it almost died! And she doesn't get to share her wisdom with anyone else...

I'm also staggered that that minister has been gone from the church for five years and the current one does NOT believe in that stance, but it's stayed in 'the rules' that the elders and leaders must be men.
