The First Baptist Church dismissed Mary Lambert on Aug. 9 with a letter explaining that the church had adopted an interpretation that prohibits women from teaching men. She had taught there for 54 years.

The letter quoted the first epistle to Timothy: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

The Rev. Timothy LaBouf, who also serves on the Watertown City Council, issued a statement saying his stance against women teaching men in Sunday school would not affect his decisions as a city leader in Watertown, where all five members of the council are men but the city manager who runs the city's day-to-day operations is a woman.

I'm also the daughter of a preacher and did not deal with that #######. I teach a meeting on wednesday nights at church for people around my age(guys are there too) and also play worship music with my guitar once in awhile on sundays leading the people in songs. My father the "preacher" loves when I do it. It's not about every church or preacher acting this way, it's some churches' way of thinking, but not every churches'. I'm sorry that you had to deal with that with your own situation tho.

Anyway it's sad she was fired after being there 54 years!!

Did this place just finally read the bible that they were teaching from? I mean how do you after 54 years say 'oh yea, we shouldn't be doing this'

Good question. At the same time there is context to what was said in the bible, historical and cultural context. (Many women were participating in a church environment for the first time as the temple and synagogues were basically for the men to participate in, they didn't know how it went and would be loud asking questions in the middle of things, so they were told to wait til they were home to ask their husbands all those questions so it's not chaotic in the meetings. There are women named as leaders in the churches in several places, and greetings were sent to and from them by Paul and other writers. So I happen to think it's contextual.)
