Hey Guys, I was on the phone with my husband last night who was telling me about a few co workers who are happy to see that we got approved etc. Anyways one of his co workers asked if we would get a permanent residency card or the green card as she is trying to get a green card and says its really hard (shes in the states on a work visa but has a card of some sort). I have no clue what the difference is so I was like I don't know, I dont understand how they are different? I mean how many cards do they have? Can someone please explain the difference to me, I thought you get a premanent residency card and then You can try to do citizenship in a few years.

Thanks guys,

I am just confused and would like to know what it is that I am getting.

Permanent Resident card aka Green Card (One and the same thing).

Your husband's co-worker is on a work visa i.e. H-1B. The only way she can get a Green Card/Permanent Resident card is if the company files for her or she gets married to a US citizen.

You can file for your citizenship in 3 years from your Permanent Residency card approval.

Just in case, people who are no longer married to their US citizen spouses can file after 5 years for citizenship.

Hope this helps!

I 'think' they're the same thing - I've heard them used interchangeably - for example I personally have a green card and I am considered a permanent resident.

Maybe someone else has more info...sorry

Just wanted to chime in and agree they're the same card...the permanent resident card is green (or it used to be) and I guess "green card" is easier to say than "permanent resident card."

Permanent Resident Card = Green card (and they are now, once again, green  ).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
