"NEW YORK — The process of heading home for the holidays will, for many travelers, contain some new hurdles this year. New measures aimed at thwarting potential terrorists may throw you off course if you're unprepared. Here's what you need to know about body scanners and Secure Flight, a new program that requires travelers to provide more information when booking a ticket. . . .

. . . .

Secure Flight

Secure Flight is a behind-the-scenes effort by the TSA to better match potential terrorists with watch lists. The program, which has been rolled out in phases, will formally start on Nov. 1. It requires airlines to collect a passenger's full name, birth date and gender at booking. Passengers that don't provide that information at least 72 hours before a flight won't be issued a boarding pass.

All the airlines and most of the third-party sites like Hotwire or Orbitz already require this information when you book. But you could run into problems when you get to the airport if your name as listed on your government identification is different than on your ticket.

Some suggestions to ensure you're not denied a boarding pass or held up at security:

— Check for misspellings on your ticket. Contact the airline if you find an error.

— Don't use nicknames when booking. Using "Maggie" instead of "Margaret" might hold you up.

— If you recently got married or changed your name, book your flight under the same name that's listed on your driver's license or passport.

— Pay attention to detail: If your name is listed as "John C. Doe" on your ID, don't fill out "John Christopher Doe" when you book. A discrepancy like that will probably be resolved, but even the smallest difference could lead a security agent at the airport to do a double-take, slowing you down.

The TSA estimates that only about 1 percent of travelers won't make it through security because of a discrepancy, Kimball says. Although it's unlikely you won't be able to fly because of a mishap, you still might be delayed if your ID and ticket don't match up. That hold-up will likely be less than five or 10 minutes while screeners verify your ID and boarding pass, Orbitz's Tornatore estimates.

But when you're trying to catch a flight, "10-minute delays can make a difference," she said.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Pay attention to detail:

This will probably trip up most non-veteran/military types.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

The use of nicknames when booking flights is never a good idea.

I heard a story way before 9/11 of a woman whose real first name was Mary

booked a flight from NY to California under her nickname "Kate"

and flew there with her husband to visit relatives.

When she got to the airport for the return flight they didn't permit her to board

and she was forced to buy another ticket with the name on her drivers' license.

If there was one simple thing I could change about the US, it would be to get rid of this airport bullsh*t.

No more obese TSA drones, no more body scanners, no more "take your shoes off," no more checking of luggage and no more obnoxious name--birthday--gender matching.

I remember when in the early '90s, my ex-girlfriend could sell the return portion of her round-trip ticket via a Recycler ad to a gal from England. They both went to LAX International and the girl checked in under her name after which they split. Everybody won, and flying was much more relaxed and enjoyable.

The terrorist thread I simply eliminate by not invading sovereign nations anymore, not declaring wars for profit, not supporting Israel anymore, and not dropping bombs on the population. Had we used the $1,000,000,000,000.00 we spent on destroying Afghanistan so far in building schools, hospitals, houses, streets and bridges there, they would have loved us to death and given us the few Al 'Queda people on silver platters instead of hating us for what we did to them.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Oh you do, do you? You 'simply eliminate' the terrorist threat in this manner? How very convenient for you. Do you have purple unicorns in your world too?

Yeah, let's not support liberal democracies that uphold our values. Let's just let the despots have their way in the world.

I suppose quoting Santayana to you will do absolutely no good at all, but here goes nothing: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

Which war are we making a profit on?

Guess who was the biggest foreign aid donor to Afghanistan prior to 9/11? That one alone blows away your theory faster than than an IED on the road to Kandahar.

U.S. foreign aid doesn't win popularity polls abroad nor UN votes as general rule.

So not supporting Israel anymore will do what exactly?

The gigantic US war machine, namely Halliburton & Co., are making insane amounts of money off the war, and so do "independent" contractors such as Blackwater. And you know who makes money every time Halliburton makes money? Ex-Halliburton CEO ####### Cheney, also former VP of the United States, the very one who urged us to go to war in the first place.

The big losers of the war are the US troops, the US taxpayers, basically We The People. The wool-over-the eyes thing only works because of people like you who rather invest in war and death abroad, than in schools, hospitals, education, and peace. Sometimes ignorance is a bliss, indeed.

If your spouse is booking your tickets for a flight together, be sure he is aware that this information needs to be provided for all people flying! We have upcoming travel plans and when I asked my husband if he had filled in the Secure Flight information he said he thought he had, but he didn't remember for sure. So, using the link provided by the airlines we are flying, I had him double-check. Yep - he had filled in the Secure Flight information - for himself! Mine was still blank even though he knows it and had booked both tickets! It would not have been a happy day for us getting to the airport to find he could board and I couldn't. So, if someone else is booking your tickets or you are booking tickets for someone else, ensure that the information from all passengers are included in the Secure Flight page.

Of course there's no U.S. defense industry to speak of during peacetime is there? Your logic means doctors and hospitals cause disease to make money. Newflash for you, Bob- Halliburton and KBR made money before Iraq and Afghanistan and Obama and crew are part of the conspiracy as they still hand out no-bid contracts to these and other companies. Not many corporations are in this line of work but it's like you know that or seen them in action while in the military (just assuming you aren't a vet).

BTW, most public schools don't get most of their funding from the federal government so they aren't in competition for dollars with DOD.

Since you missed the part in economics 101, there's a thing called guns or butter as these goods are largely mutually exclusive of one another. Unfortunately, no one has won a war with schools or hospitals so get off your unicorn.

If ignorance is bliss, you're one happy fellow. The U.S. was the largest foreign aid donor to Afghanistan prior to 9/11 so your theory is a cruel joke on We the People.
