Hello VJers,

I have being following all posts as a guest since I started filing for my spouse in December 2009. You all are helpful. I just register as a member because On October 18th, which was supposed to be the happiest day of our life turned into a sad day for us. My spouse left home at 4.30am for his interview at 7am and there was terrible traffic delay. He got to the Lagos embassy at 7.35am and was told he was late and need to reschedule. So we sent an E-mail and was reschedule for March 17th 2011. We're really distraught at this time because not only do we want to be together since SIX years of long distance relationship but he got a job offer here and was waiting for his visa. I don't know what to do at this time. Had anyone been in this situation? Can I appeal for an earlier day? Please I'll appreciate any advise as you all have good ones. Thank you and God bless!!

Hi,

First of all, Congratulation on approved petition. All you need to do is to email the US Consulate despite that another date has been re-scheduled and you really want to be with her before March 2011, Email the US Consulate with a concrete reason why you need to have the date change, Your response must be reasonable before the give that consideration, the Consulars there are very good and considerable. just let them know that it is really unfortunate that your spouse could not make to the interview on time due terrific delay on her way to the Embassy. Please do not write a letter of appeal to them, You have to polite in your statement to enable them look into your case to consider it. US Consulate in Lagos is not a place to appeal for any reason at all. The Consulars have the sole right to consider or not based on how you answered them politely, They are human being, Many people have been in the same situation right that and the Consulate considered their request based on how polite they are on their email.

Due to high fraudulent Visa applicants in the US Consulate in Lagos, the Consulate is doing everything possible to make sure that they give Visa to the applicants that merit it. Inaddition to this , i will advice you to tell your spouse to get prepare and review her approved visa petition than rushing quickly to be scheduled for an interview if she is not well prepared. It is on her own advantage to get prepared well when you email the US Consulate for bring the date forward .

Every disappointment is a blessing , I believe both of you are Christian, rely on God and prepare well and review all the evidences in the petition and allow God to do the rest. Be truthful when you email them about your situation and plead with them to consider your request, I believe they will definetely get back to you with a favourable rely.

Remain Blessed.

Lagos consulate can be a real rough one to predict. If you are both of African heritage you have a much better chance of them being ok with you but they are famous for outragous acts against couple forced to go through them. They are the worst consulate to deal with and the people there act in violation of immigration policy on a regular basis. You should explain that you have a potential job waiting the apporval of the visa and that it will cause your family a hardship if the position is missed due to the difficulty of securing offers in the current economic situation.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I really appreciate your response. I just don't know if pleading will change anything due to the high volume of visa demands. Have you witnessed any expedition or change due to pleading? But I can surely try and do pleading. Thanks

Believe it or not, I went thru this with my EX. He got to the Lagos embassy 20 mins late due to traffic and weather conditions. I was soo upset. I pleaded with him to leave in plenty of time, but as u well know, the Lagos traffic can be unpredictable. Anyhow, he waited there til 2pm that day to finally get to talk to someone about it. He just stayed outside and never left. When they did finally speak to him, they gave him an appointment right there and then. It was for the following month. So not too much of a delay. I think he shud have tried to talk to someone that day instead of leaving to go send an email. Maybe if he goes back in person, he could request a sooner date. Just a suggestion ! Good Luck !

Thank you for the response. We didn't know or expect that rescheduling will take as long as filing...so disappointing!!! If I knew that all along he would never had left w/o sorting it out. We already sent a pleading letter yesterday and we're waiting for a response. If still the same next week, my hubby will have to go back then (he resides in Abuja and already left) and I'll just have to start calling and pleading until something happens. If nothing still happens then I'll contact my congressman/house of rep, good thing midterm election is in November!!! We'll just keep trying as hard as it may come. Thanks again for this great suggestion. God bless

Okay...so after sending pleading letter to Lagos embassy, they responded that due to high volume of request, they are not granting any rescheduling to ANYONE (which I don't want to believe). I sent another pleading letter again. The sad part of this is that I just got a new job and I can't go anywhere until I'm done with my job orientation and I know that if my husband apply for a visiting visa they might not give him since he's pending for IR visa. So our plan B is to get my congressman involve, hopefully that will help. I guess it's a sin to miss one's appointment..really sad!!

Thanks. It's been challenging but I'm still hoping and praying things will be okay. My husband thought sending the email will speed things up and did not think of staying and begging. I guess everything has a purpose. We've appealed with no result, so we're going through our congressman but with the election, we don't know how fast it will get done. Keep us in your prayers.

UPDATE: So we got my house of rep involved and was given an earlier reschedule for next month instead of the initial March 2011. I should have done this immediately when we're denied after several appeals but we wanted to see what we can do on our own. It took probably three days after meeting with my house of rep that we got our early date with a friendly apology from Lagos embassy, whatever! but glad all went well. Thanks all.

Congrats on your persistence, T-hoping! Because of the Lagos traffic and after reading what happened to you guys, my husband and I plan to spend the night before the interview at a hotel on Victoria Island not far from the Embassy...we don't want to take aaaaany chances!!! My best of luck to you!
