My fiancee and I are beginning the K-1 process. Do I need to be there with her in Costa Rica when she goes for the interview? Does it make a difference if I am there or not?

10/01/2010: Engaged
10/29/2010: I-129f sent UPS to TX
11/02/2010: I-129f delivered to TX service center @ 12:13 PM
11/08/2010: Check to Homeland Security cleared
11/13/2010: NOA1 received

04/26/2011: NOA2 received

06/07/2011: Interview date

06/09/2011: Visa received

06/18/2011: US entry

06/25/2011: Marriage

07/28/2011: Employment Authorization Document filed

10/03/2011: EAD approved

10/06/2011: EAD received

09/30/2012: Matthew Jacob born!

08/27/2013: I-751 sent FedEx to Vermont

01/11/2014: New green card received

It's not mandatory, but it's helpful. They kind of like it when the USC is there. If you're able to get to her interview, then don't hesitate! :thumbs: My fiancé is also coming for my interview.

Some consulates do (basically) require that the USC attends. Some consulates do not let the USC attend. I don't know specifically which ones are which but based on your embassy information page it does state that the USC is allowed to attend. My opinion would be to go if you can, because it definitely can't hurt. :star:

07/28/10 Petition received at VSC then forwarded to Lewisville, TX (received there 7/29/10)

08/02/10 NOA1 Notice date

08/06/10 Touched

08/07/10 Received NOA1 in mail

01/31/11 I-129F Petition APPROVED!!!

02/03/11 Received hard copy of NOA2 (although the envelope is stamped Feb 2...so only one day to get to me :) )

03/01/11 Interview (FH is in AP)

04/13/11 FH notified to come to the embassy with his passport!

04/26/11 FH received Visa

04/29/11 FH Arrived in the US!!! JFK POE

06/08/11 MARRIED!

Well, I'm planning on going to Costa Rica for an engagement celebration there so I guess we can plan on having the party when the interview is scheduled!

In some consulates it is really hard to get an approval WITHOUT the petitioner being present. However, in some other consulates it does not really make a difference. I would advise you to look for other members who filed a petition on behalf of their Costa Rican fiance(e) and see what their experiences have been with the interview process. You could also look at the regional forums for more consulate specific information.

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

over all you are given the chance to be there,equal to other petitioners,however it depends on your consulate,i was reading up on ours,and they dont let USC in,so a girl who was the petitioner contacted the embassy prior to the interview and got an email stating that she could be at the interview,she showed it to the guards and it actually sort of helped her interview.
