Hi there

Just a quick question...i was wanting to know if anyone could help with some information.

I got married one year ago the end of November, I got my green card, permanent resident status

this month, I have been told I can apply for Citizenship in 3 years, my green card is due for renewal

a couple of months before the 3 years is up, what do I have to do? do i have to apply again for a green card

removal of conditions or can I simply apply for the citizenship early?

thanks in advance

You have a conditional green card valid for two years. If you want to preserve your permanent residency status beyond its expiration date, you MUST file a Petition to Remove the Conditions on Residence (Form I-751) within the 90-day period before the expiration date of your green card. Failure to do so will automatically terminate your residency status when your card expires. There is a forum here that discusses everything you need to know: http://www.visajourn...ral-discussion/

You are eligible for marriage-based citizenship 3 years after the start date on your present green card. You may file form N-400 within the 90-day period before your eligibility date. (NB: It's 90 days, not 3 months. Your application will be rejected if you file even one day early.)

Hope this helps.

Good luck

As PP stated you are eligible after 3 years of LPR status, not 3 years of marriage. You can apply for citizenship 90 days prior to the 3 year anniversary of becoming an LPR. At that point you will have met the requirement for being married for at least 3 years.
