Can we agree that a setup like the Berlin wall would make it virtually IMPOSSIBLE to enter the US from the Mexican side, outside of the checkpoints?

Of course it would. If there wasn't the bad taste of automated gunfire, mines, electric barb wires and guards ordered to indiscriminately shoot to kill on sight. Is that what the US should become? A regime with no regard for human life? Bravo!

I'm looking forward to the next Congress as it will be show time for the Rebulicans. They'll actually have to come up with a concept of the way forward rather than having the luxury of collecting their salaries and benefits for simply saying NO. They'll have to explain how they will translate their agenda while living up to the expectation they have managed to set - i.e. cut taxes while simultaneously reducing the deficit. I'm looking very forward to them trying to square that circle. Wanna pass legislation? Make sure you paid for it - that's been the demand they've made when opposing bills that would create jobs. Now, paying for the cost of legislation is not exactly something Republicans have ever done before. Brand new territory for the GNOP. It'll be quite entertaining. The country will suffer, of course, but entertaining it will be.

There is the concept that if one doesn't fence in the whole backyard..... your dog simply runs out the small unfenced section so why even put up the 95% coverage?

TO that others reply: it's a lot easier to guard the remaining areas if the rest is in place and putting up a read deterrent/ obstacle to entering.

How big was East Germany? Who controlled their fence? Which direction was the fence aimed, keeping people out or in?

There is no valid comparison, and no matter how much you hate brown people we are not going to shoot first ask questions later on border crossers.

I don't think people are trying to compare and I think the wall in that case was meant to both keep people in and keep people out.

The truth is, no wall would keep out 100%, not even that wall did but we have an open border where businesses operate ferrying people across, thats crazy.

With even modest deterrent we can make a huge impact on that traffic.

We had 4 million cross that border between 2000 and 2005. Four Frickin Million!!!!

In a few years when the economy picks up, the waves will start again.

In fact we might save some legislation time by waiting and making them all citizens in one shot.

Clearly the wall kept people in but this was also a time when paranoia about Spys was at kooky levels and border security reflected this.... insuring they did not enter.

ANd just for Sh_ts and grins... I bet I could locate instances where people did try to "get in" the UssR via that wall. (People do crazy things for love.)

Danno, you're making matters worse here. There was no way to get into the USSR via that wall. If you came from the west side of that wall (politically speaking), you still had to venture through a bit of East Germany and all of Poland to make it to the USSR. The wall, in that scenario, would have been the least of your worries. Grab a map sometime, dude.

That aside, the wall had one purpose only - to keep people from leaving East Germany. West Germans and the citizens of West Berlin could use the crossing points at any time to go East and visit. They could transit through East Germany if they were to travel from West Berlin to Hamburg, Hanover or Bonn - and vice versa. No problems to cross over from West to East. It wasn't about keeping people out, my friend, no matter how much you wish to hang on to that notion.

The rest will be taken care of by implementing huge fines and prison sentences to employers who get caught hiring illegals.

If we can fly to the Moon and spent over $1,000,000,000,000.00 in Afghanistan, we can build a friggin wall.

Of course that's what's advocated. It has to be for a very simple reason: The German - German border would have been ineffective without the 50,000 guards ordered to shoot to kill, without the mines, automatic guns and electric wires. Without the total disregard for human life and without the extensive intelligence work carried out by the STASI, East Germany wouldn't have stood a chance to stop the drain. Assuming anything to the contrary would suggest utter ignorance of the realities.

The point is, if We The People really cared, we'd stop letting corporate and other business interests dictate our policies that are positively geared towards sufficient supply of easily exploitable labor. Put businesses that hire illegal aliens out of business and the influx will stop. It's just that simple. Save the money you'd spend on that wall and use it towards chasing down the enablers and profiteers of illegal immigration.
