Across the globe and especially in America, hundreds of other gay Muslims have started to pursue marriages of convenience--or MOC, as they are known-- in which gay Muslims seek out lesbian Muslims, and vice versa, for appearances' sake.

[...]

"Marriages of convenience are the result of gay Muslims wanting to avoid emotional and physical harm to themselves," says Muhammed Ali, a board member of Homan, a Los Angeles-based support group for gay Iranians.

Homosexuality is a crime punishable by death in much of the Islamic world.

[...]

Muslim authorities around the world have repeatedly emphasized that homosexuality is not permissible. Muzammil Siddiqi of the Islamic Society of North America said there is no flexibility on this topic.

"Homosexuality is a moral disorder. It is a moral disease, a sin and corruption. . . . No person is born homosexual, just like no one is born a thief, a liar or murderer," he said. "People acquire these evil habits due to a lack of proper guidance and education."

It's better than the alternative of getting stoned to death or beheaded. If both are consensual adults and know what they are doing. I don't see a problem with it. Much luck to them!

From the article:

"Across the globe and especially in America, hundreds of other gay Muslims have started to pursue marriages of convenience..."

You'll notice the article puts special emphasis on America. To my knowledge, there is no jurisdiction in these United States that stones or beheads homosexuals.

I'm sure there are many non-Musilm American gay men married to non-Muslim American lesbian women for appearance's sake as well.

Probably, but if your parents are immigrants from a strict society, or if you come from a tight-knit religious community, or anything along those lines, those appearances seem to get a lot more important.

You should see me friend lamenting his lack of permission to date any girls who are not also Bengali. He dated a Jewish girl for awhile, but when asked to dump her by his parents, he complied.

Imagine that if you were gay. And Muslim.

Yup, I think you're right. Coming from a more restrictive culture is definitely a hindrance if you're gay or even when you're not gay and just want to lead a life different from you parents.

However, I do think it is quite interesting that the article specifically looks at gay and lesbian Muslims when the reporter could have done the same article about homosexual fundamental Christians in the US or even better written an article comparing different groups. It would have been amazingly insightful to find out whether there actually is a difference from a gay perspective. But alas, Muslims in America remain a hot topic given current debates and parallels to other similarly restrictive groups would smash our dearly hold illusion of categorical difference.

I'm sure there are many non-Musilm American gay men married to non-Muslim American lesbian women for appearance's sake as well.

What all this sex-toy stuff about? Why would lesbians and gays use the same toys if they're Muslim but different ones if they're not?

Sorry, had to ask...
